Paulthagerous: I called Apple to be told that it is 'not called the iPhone 5, it is the New iPhone'. I promptly hung up.

But apple name it the iphone 5 on their own website... or was that sarcasm

She sounded dead serious, so I hung up out of frustration.

It's called the iphone 5 here http://www.apple.com/nz/iphone/ . Perhaps they were confused with the ipad, which is call 'the new' which is a pathetic name. I presume the next one will be 'the newer'.. Sunds like they need some CSR training

IsThisOneGood: Ok. Seems like Telecom had learned its lesson from last year then. Because they sold 4S on prepay with free sim last year. But I immediately switched to 2Degrees haha.

Man NZ is always screwed. Last year we had to wait a whole month for the 4S.This year we managed to get on the 2nd wave release date but the carriers mess it up with no prepay and apple offering no preorder.

Nonprayingmantis summed it up nicely. You can buy outright on release day

Had a little play with one this morning. Had a friend get back from Aussie this morning. Really surprised by how small it feels compared to the 4 due to the decreased weight and thinness. I was going to get a cheap 4 for $599 but have completely changed my mind to get a 5 after that. Just ordered an Otterbox commuter case off trademe. They are currently trying to get a nano sim from telecom but I don't like their chances, just a flashed iPod currently. AU$799 plust 15% gst refund at airport and exchange rate conversion puts it just over NZ $900 I think. Biggest question is .......where the hell is mine!

Australia's GST is 10% only.

My assumption, still over $100 cheaper. Telecom said no nano sims until Friday but were quite rude apparently, have to admit, anytime I have gone into a telecom store they have been helpful except when you mention iphone. I think there seems to be a pro android culture for some reason. Apparently telecom have nanosims on website http://telecom.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1634/kw/Telecom/session/L3RpbWUvMTM0ODI4NjU0NS9zaWQvZS1obFZSNmw%3D

Just spoke to a friend working at a Telecom retail store, no outright purchases for the first two weeks. Vodafone store employee said not for the first few months, but what does he know.

Hmmm. Outright as in just outright, or outright plus migrate existing Telecom microsim on contract to nanosim?

I doubt it. It's an Apple thing. Operators can't say or do anything if not approved by Apple. If they are told not to say anything they won't say anything.

Sorry, I'm not clear. I mean if you buy outright and move your Telecom contracted sim over that will be allowed?  That will stop any buying outright and walking out to another provider

More just they way things are said or not said. I bought an iPhone 4 for my wife about 6 months ago and I got mad to feel like a lepper for not getting, I think it w an htc x1? Because it was a better phone and why on earth would you want an iPhone. I went in once apple nz released the new pricing for the 4 and 4s and asked when telecom where updating the prices.and pretty much got told to f off. After hearing about my friends experience in he same store really frustrates me because we can only get xt where we live. Would happily tell them to shove it and go back to Vodafone if we could.

I rang vodafone and they said my preorder will ship on/from the 28th and could take up to 7 working days because of the "hype and demand".
Is that for real?

Yup, but a happy wife = happy life. iPhone is cheap compared to other shiny/sparkly things out here.
