Given that this is the first time NZ has been in the first wave, I'd suggest Apple will be taking at least some extra care to ensure those scheduled for day-one delivery will receive them in a timely fashion.

Your forgetting we were in the first wave of the mighty iPhone 3G  cool

Given your expected delivery is 9/10 - 16/10 I'd say chances are slim to none in getting it next week

So I've just rang Apple, apparently this is the situation:

The phones are already in the country, in a warehouse somewhere in Auckland. They will not ship until the morning, at which point they will be delivered same-day. However, she estimated that there are close to 18,000 phones going out tomorrow, so there is a real chance that some people will not be getting them tomorrow as planned.

I don't care about SOME people... I care about US people...

18K phones on day 1 - that's pretty damned impressive if it's even close to accurate... At an average of, say $1,500 a pop, that's a $27,000,000 revenue day just from tiny wee New Zealand...

I am not at all happy to have been right about worrying that there would be too many phones to deliver in one day. I hope that warehouse is near to Takapuna, is all I'm saying!

On reflection, can that postulate number of 18,000 units being shipped from
the Auckland warehouse of mystery really be taken seriously? Presumably, that doesn't include what must be the umpteen thousands of handsets which must already be with 3rd party distributors...

I dunno... all this speculation is giving me chronic gas (to compliment my already aggravated and aforementioned lumbago...)
