A workmate came back from Lunch just before, Was un boxing an iPhone 7.. I mean iPhone 8, Didn't look any bit different or better that the iPhone 6 he had next to it bar the silver to gloss black casing.
Would have been more interested if someone put one of these on my desk:

The internals are considerably better and that is what counts. The external has changed with glass to allow wireless charging etc

There are a couple of subtle external changes between the 6 and 7 that were quite significant

Home button is now solid-state button with haptic feedback... lets face it those buttons were a bit crap - and now it is water resistant.
The way the camera bump is integrated is much better
Stereo speakers
removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack that I never used and just filled up with pocket fluff.

Several tech commentators have suggested that users hold off pre-ordering the X on the basis that it is an untested first gen model with significant new tech and, at the moment, no real-world user experiences. They are not suggesting don't buy, just hold off for a bit to see how it performs after release - if all good, then jump in. Of course, the downside to this approach is that you don't get the phone on day one.

A recent example is the newly released Essential Phone. On paper, this is an outstanding piece of kit, yet following release the software has shown to be buggy, camera performance poor and the titanium case not as super-tough as promoted. Of course, a major difference is that Apple have significant experience in the mobile market, but do you see any risk in buying an untested newly developed X? Or are you not worried?

I have really tossed between Note 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. Note 8 is an excellent phone; but Google play store apps are still lacking (especially in medical field) compared to App Store. Also some apps for Canary security cameras and Ring - the apps are better optimised in iOS... this was similar when I was using Galaxy S6. I loved the phone and camera. I didn't like the battery life (especially idling).

iPhone X was initially considered (this is work phone, so I don't really pay for it) - but given that it's pushing higher resolution, not as good battery life as iPhone Plus (generally Plus battery life is really good); I felt that iPhone 8+ will last longer (i.e. iPhone 4s lasted much longer than iPhone 4 due to its battery performance). I will use it for a year and probably hand it to my wife who is still happy with her iPhone 6+.

Hopefully X will be more refined next year!

If my phone were free I'd get the X or the Note 8 no questions! Seriously!

You've just reminded me why I went from Galaxy to Apple empire - idle battery life! The Samsung would drain battery just because you've installed many apps. That really did my head in.

I am not a fan boy of Apple or Samsung. What does annoy me is the idle battery drain / poor app optimisation compared to iOS. I love the silent slider button and how the vibration in silent mode gives you really strong vibration without much of buzzing noise. Little things do add up unfortunately - and decision to stay with for another year...

Same.... and the apps being more stable in some cases. Things may have changed but that is why I moved.

I asked someone who has a Galaxy S8 and it drains when not being used too. I think it's not the Samsung, but the Android OS is not sleeping deep enough. I haven't put much effort into it. They lost a customer thanks to this. Otherwise am very tempted with the Note 8 ...

But my iphone SE (secondhand on TM) brought me back to the good old Nokia days - it will last me more than a week if I don't use the smart features. Eg if I my 13" i7 ultrabook with me :)

Apple have an amazing reputation for great production design, incredible supply chain, and virtually no-questions-asked warranty. The chip is already out in the wild, the camera design team is the very best in the world, etc etc. Testing procedures are the best in the industry.

The X is nowhere near untested, it will probably be the most tested phone available when it comes to the market.

The iPhone 8 apparently has no problems with bending according to bending tests. It looks like it is sort of the perfected version of the 3-4 years of the iPhone 6 form factor. The only negative in the actual form appears to be the sapphire glass over the camera, which is apparently is only about as durable as the gorilla glass on the front. So could potentially scratch in your pocket from dirt and grit.

Yeah, certainly from the 6S onwards bending wasn't an issue anymore

I use a Sena case with my iPhone 6S plus, allows me to be semi naked without worrying about whats in my pocket

I have noticed there is more haptic feedback from menus on the iPhone 8 vs the iPhone 7, despite them both running iOS11. Especially changing camera modes, theres nothing on the iPhone 7 and theres that subtle vibration to let you know you've changed the mode.

I am not talking about Sapphire glass in general, I am talking about the sapphire that apple uses on the iphone 8 camera lens, doesn't appear to be as hard as the type used on watches. I have it on my watch and it doesn't scratch at all. Watch this video as they do a test. I was really surprised when I saw it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLAmL6Tz59Y&t=5s . Apart from the lens, the phones does really well in the durability test, better than most other phones they test.

Now that I have used my new phone a bit, here are my first impressions. Note that I am upgrading from a 6S+ to an 8+, so I am getting the benefit of any features that were introduced last year.

- The front looks almost identical to the 6S+.

- The glass on the back doesn't look as premium as I was expecting. I have the silver variant and I have a feeling it might look classier in black.

- The haptic feedback is really cool.

- Restoring a backup from iCloud was really quick and painless.

- My existing Sena case seems to fit fine.

- The podcasts app in iOS 11 is really confusing. Why do I have a whole lot of stuff in my 'to play' queue that I didn't add and can't remove?

- Pairing my watch was a bit of a nuisance as I had to do a total reset, then pair it to the new phone and restore a backup.

- With everything set up as desired I have only used 11Gb, so I'm now confident with my decision to go with the 64Gb variant.

- Everything else 'just works' as you would expect from an iPhone.

Overall it's not a massive leap forward, but a nice evolutionary update to what was already a reasonably good product.

Good points. The day one theme is a bit silly although Ive been guilty in the past. At these prices, let someone else beta test. If NZ is weeks after the US thats a help

The antenna gate is kinda weird as in the 4 had better cellular chips/antenna than the 3GS and can hold the call better than the 3GS at lower signal level, even though it does lose some when you bridge the two contacts together. So the end result is that you still have roughly the same call quality between the 4 and 3GS despite the bars/signals looking worse on the 4.

While it's just funny that people complain that their 6 would bend after sitting or putting a bunch of forces on them.

I guess the takeaway is that apple has pretty good SoC/chip design and they are the 'least bad' out of most of the other manufacturers.
