Common sense is not as common as you think.
tonyhughes: How does the upgrade to the ipad make your existing one worse than it was?
Terrible Apple for continuing to release new products??
I have an ipad 2 and the release of three subsequent ipad models has not affected my ipad one little bit.
If you are upset at company's releasing new models with any frequency at all, then you probably need to take a close look at how business and technology actually work.

jonherries: Hmmm pricing is interesting. Nexus 7 for $399 (Dick Smith) and ipad mini for $479.
I guess the choice will depend on the ecosystem in terms of sunk cost and availability...?
Makes it a much harder decision than I thought it would be.

Behodar: iPad mini, Mac mini, new 13" MacBook Pro, iTunes 11, availability of new 21.5" iMac, and announcement of new 27" iMac.
Edit: Updated :)

Don't forget build quality. The Verge had this to say:
Like most Apple products, the build of the smaller tablet is excellent, easily surpassing the competition on the market. By comparison, the Nexus 7 and Fire HD feel like toys. Other manufacturers are going to have to up their game with this product in town. It's just a striking difference in materials and solidness.

Yes I see your point in terms of durability which I think is a bigger issue than geeks might appreciate.
My wife wants a tablet for reading books and surfing the net and doing her email, and it is likely that she will only end up replacing it if it breaks, unlike us.
Therefore, if the ipad mini is going to last significantly longer it is probably the better choice, at the price differential and on longevity alone the meeting point in terms of how much longer the ipad mini needs to last about 20% longer than the Nexus. Which if you assume a 24 month life for a nexus is 28 months for the ipad.

it doesnt matter about build quality to most apple buyers , in 6 months -year, apple will bring out its new model and everyone it seems will buy it because its new, so im not sure build quality is that important that you would pay $200 more than the kindle.
Yatey:. Knowing this cycle makes consumers aware of when to buy, and when not to buy, an iOS device. This ensures they wont be stung by the introduction of an updated product, decreasing the resale value of their recently purchased device overnight, and also hurting the relationship between consumers in this position and the company. To update a product in the middle of its 'traditional' cycle means that some people, who are fully awear of this cycle, will have purchased an iPad 3 maybe 1-2 months ago, and felt secure that their premium dollar investment would secure them the best iPad available for no more than half a year to go. The resale value of that iPad they just purchased (mine included) just dropped $200+ dollars due to the introduction of the iPad 4.
It is quite uncharacteristic for Apple to update a product halfway during its perceived life cycle. I think that's where most owners of iPad 3's will feel hurt after this announcement since it is very unexpected.
