myopinion: Tried it coming to work this morning. One problem with it - my charger cant keep up with the battery drain nd dropped 6% on my half hour journey. So on a long journey this might actually drain the phone completely. This is on an iPhone 5. Other than that I like it.

how does that compare with apple maps? from memory that's about right with my iphone 4 and the original iOS google maps

Google Maps does use more power as the same charger would still charge my iPhone using Apple Maps. So for some reason the Google version is using more power.

Potentially more data is transferred during the drive, or the GPS position is updated more regularly than iOS maps.

I would say as long as you have a charger that can keep up and a large data cap (if that is true) then this is a good thing :)

I suspect that they will add the ability to download sections of maps to a later release.

It looks like they have got the basics into this one to get it out there. Similar thing happened with the YouTube app. At first it was quite basic, and only for iPhone, but a recent update added iPad support and a whole swag of other features.

What, you mean that installing Google Maps gives you a usable App Store too? *ducks*

Used it today on a known route. Verdict... Great!
Voice instructions, despite American accent, were excellent. Very good and understandable, very good pronunciation of street names (not any Maori words in this route though).
GPS positioning seemed very good, with really prompt instructions after turning etc.
Much much better than my 3 year old stand alone Navman.
Also with Google's database it finds lots of local destinations, cafes etc.

Overall, very good!

Cheers,
Joseph

Edit... This was using dear wife's iPhone 4S.

I was using Maps+ in the interim, which also seemed to be quite good, and uses Google Maps.

Try typing "Ok maps" in the search box. Map caching.
