I think this would be an extremely good device if it were to include
1. An Email application,
2. A way to sync your camera with it (like the iPod photo used to do), then upload your photos to iPhoto from anypoint in the world using Wifi
3. IM support as well as Skype (with a somehow magic Mic and speaker appearing out of nowhere)
4. A way to Remote desktop with your Leopard Based Mac, Allowing you to access FrontRow, and Stream media content over your home network or Internet similar to Apple's aTV and Sony's Location Free.  This would allow you access to more media than 16GB allocated on the device

This new iPod has a much closer Design to OSX Leopard with its dock not completely covering the icon like in Tiger and the iPhone, I would say that the next version of the iPhone has a similar dock.

Hopefully it wont take too long for developers to add this functionality.

I'd sooner buy an iphone. and don't knock EDGE, i'd sooner it's slower speed and solid reliability than this struggle with this 2.1GHz UMTS. Even if I could not use the iphone (yet) it's kind of handy just to have it. Shame there is no MMS supprt but MMS is kind of dead now, support seems to be waning on phone of recent.

I wonder if rockbox will be developed for the nano and the classic? touch screen would be kind of nice and would be great running some intelligent firmware that is not totally reliant on the custom intergration with itunes.....

iPod Touch or iPhone ?

hmm..sure iPhone is my choice. As far as I have heard iPhone = iPod + Phone, so why should I buy them separate ?

And iPod Classic is tempting me to go for it Cool

If a more feature complete iPhone came to NZ I would get that. If the iPod 'Touch' has bluetooth someone could write a little app to use a phone as aamodem & also send messages from the touch.

Actualy we do not know if the iPod touch has Bluetooth, there was gallery picture with the bluetooth symbol on the top right it has since been removed, but nothing official has been said.  Until consumers start to get units in their hands at the end of this month and start to dismantle and identify its chipset, we will not know.  It could be like the 802.11N situation, where they release a patch that enables bluetooth on the release of Bluetooth headphones, and charge you $1.99USD to enable it though.

Just ordered my 80GB iPod Classic from DSE with a 15% discount for preordering.

$339 is a great price for an 80GB seeing as the old generation 30GB iPods were still priced at $399 just a week ago.

DSE has surprised me in the last few months...

I found the 500 GB external Seagate FreeAgent drive was cheaper on DSE than Ascent. And I bough an iMac last week with $700 discount (the white model).

Yes they are offering 15% off for this weekend only on all pre-orders.

However!, you still cannot pre-order an iPod touch, and they are not expected to be available until mid-October.

Yeah, no discount on the touch, otherwise I would have seriously considered it.

I would rather spend $339 now, and wait until the second generation touch comes out which will hopefully be cheaper and have more capacity.

There is no discount as the touch is still a wee way away, the prices are roughly set at $479 and $649, for the 8gig and 16gig, however knowing apple that could change a week or two out from NZ release, which may be why they are not offering pre-order incentives just yet.
