So now that Apple has released an iPod that's like the iPhone but without the cellular voice and data services, I think it may be the end of the phone exercise...

The iPod touch, with Wi-Fi, Safari and iTunes Music Store, provides what the iPhone does, without the lock in to AT&T.

Had the iPod touch been launched with the iPhone or before, then we wouldn't see all that rage on the device.

The main problem with the iPhone is its lock to an old and slow generation of cellular data network (EGDE)...

But with the price drop in the iPhone and the fact that the iTouch only comes with 16gb, I think iPhone will continue to be a big seller.

I think this maybe the temptation that Apple been working on to win me over to Ipod world...

I must admit, Ipod Touch is very very awesome... it plays music, videos, built in itunes store and safari with wifi... well that will suit 80% of my out-and-about-need... shame, no email client support though, but with safari and Exchange OWA, i'm not far from email :-D

Oops, I might get Ipod-ied!

I wonder how many applications will be popping up for the the new iPod Touch, surely someone out there will be able to develop something useful like they are now for the iPhone

Hmmm, I think I would rather have a iPhone and just keep my 5G ipod for actual large amount of space, I have 12GB of music and Podcasts, and that Amount will increase dramatically over time, But think of all the sweet apps you could build for the iPod Touch.

I think the iPod touch is a competitor to disconnected PDAs now. The true successor to the Apple Newton. And perhaps the big competitor to Nokia's "internet tablet" which never saw much of a following really...

I agree with Mauricio, Ipod Touch is a threat to PDA-only pocketpc. With Wifi as its ammunition, and ability to play media files, and surf internet, and option to use vast free web applications for storing notes, documents etc... I think PocketPC needs a big wakeup call!

As for me, Ipod Touch will fill my needs with more to spare... My PMC is 20GB and I don't use 50% of it at all (at best 30%, with heaps of my fav music, and a doze of videos). So 16GB of flash storage is more than adequate. With h624 compression, video files get smaller too...

So Ipod users, educate me please... aside from music, videos, and pictures, contacts and notes... what else can you sync/store? On Windows, where does the contacts and notes sourced from?

I would've bought a Nokia 770 if they had sold it in NZ....What I would love is a Windows live IM client and Skype client for iPhone, I'm sure they will come soon enough.  Too bad the iPod Touch has no Mic or external speaker...And Heh the Pocket Pc market has been dead for years now, So it wouldn't be hard to beat.

I have 4.5GB of Legally purchased music, and 8GB of Podcasts, I think the virtue of lots of space on a portable would be that you don't have to bother what goes on and what stays on the computer, so you're never in the situation of "Oh damn I really wanted to listen to that song, but its not on here"  But other than music and photos etc I use it for backing up my steam games etc when my mate wants to borrow them(Back up to the iPod, then give him the iPod with the steam files, then he installs the games from his ipod instead of having to spend a day downloading them)  Just things like that, I have never came close to my iPods full capaticy, but its good to know I have excess leg room for when my collection does get marginally bigger

Umm... i think pocketpc device has evolved more into phone sector than dead... Windows Mobile is far from dead FYI.

You can hardly compare a standalone PDA(+ wifi) to a smart phone though....As the iPod touch does not include a Cell Radio, it is a direct competition to any standalone PDA, and because the standalone PDA market has been dead for years, it won't be hard for it to gain market share and win.  It carries the iPod/Apple brandname remember...

It'll do well, I'm sure.

Touchscreen is nice, but I can't see any reason to adopt this over my N95 (OK, my N95 only has 4GB storage at the moment, but it will be 8GB by years end, and then 16GB and 32GB during next year. . . ).

Anybody know how long it will take until the new models will be available in NZ? It's been virtually impossible to buy an iPod for the past month with no retailers having stock so I'm guessing Apple would want stock out there pretty quickly.

Best thing to do would be to buy directly from Apple. The Nano's are shipping in 1-3 business days, so before monday next week, the iPod classics are also shipping in 1-3business days, and the iPod touch will be shipping at the end of this month/By september 28th.

I think it will be a while before they're available in NZ. Apple NZ still have the old ones on their website.

I'm going to get one sent over from USA when they become available as I imagine it'll be cheaper.
