I am gonna have a wee rant now, please bare with me it will be over shortly!
Who Will Get It?
I see everyone is assuming that Vodafone will be getting the iPhone? Has anyone actually thought that maybe Telecom could be getting it, and releasing it inline with their new network next year?
Just a thought -
Telecom's new network to be released late next year - iPhone rumoured to be available in NZ late next year
Telecom's new Data network falls back to EDGE - iPhone data runs on EDGE.
Best way to launch a new network - get the iPhone on board
Telecom sell Apple products already - Voda don't
Telecom just changed to Yahoo! - Mail.app and Syncing with iTunes are Yahoo! ready and the Weather App uses Yahoo! to get the weather.
Vodafone haven't got the iPhone in ANY other country
Now don't get me wrong, I know that it will come down to who will put the highest bid in (or pay Apple the most money) but there is a lot to say Telecom *could* get it.
Price
As for the price - I think $1000 is a good price point BUT this would be retail price not discounted price once you take a 2 year contract. With a 2 year contract $400-800 depending on the plan. I wouldn't be suprised if it is more than that though.
Don't Judge a Book by it's Cover
What people need to realise, if you haven't got one or tried one for a period of time, you simply cannot judge as to wether it is any good or not. Just because your mate told you it was rubbish doesn't mean it is and vice versa just becasue some one else told you it was the best thing since sliced bread (which it is by the way) doesn't mean it is. Some people will automatically hate it just because it is made by Apple, on the flip side some people will love it just because it is made by Apple.
MY Conclusion
I can firmly say it is the best phone, mp3 player, internet/email, multimedia and organiser I have ever owned. Having owned a samsung mp3 player, an ipod 4th gen, 5th gen video, ipod mini, a multitude of phone's (Nokia's, LG's, Sanyo's & Samsungs), a Paper diary and organiser, a HTC Harrier, a HTC Apache and a Treo 650, and an Archos media player. All of which don't come close to the iPhone in usability. (I know, I know, I am one of those people that has to have the latest gadgets)
The HTC's I've had in the past are simply PDA's with a phone added on, and the phone quality was/is never that good. (I haven't tried the new OKTA Touch or OKTA Boss so I can't comment on the phone quality on those) But the iPhone's phone is awsome. The sound quality is great at both ends. I can honestly say since I have had the iPhone I have had no interest in other phones that have come onto the market.
There are a couple of issues with the iPhone (I know it's not perfect) for example sending multiple sms, no video capture, no disk mode, and the lack of activesync support, but hey it can't be perfect can it! and I am sure these are all issues that can be fixed with an update to the firmware.
Cheers nzbullet Note: My thoughts and comments are my own and not of anyone else including my employer
Nice rant NZbullet! very reasonable 'brain dump' of your take on the iphone's release in this country - I must admit that I'm a novice in the cell-phone world but after trying a Nokia N95, Blackberry Pearl, Treo 750w, Harrier and Apache all for varying lengths of time, I can't wait for a NZ legit iphone!! mainly because of the crap-user-experience I've had with these devices. $1000 sounds about right without any plan subsidy, considering the LG Prada is wahat, about $1500 NZ in Voda retail stores?
