chiefie: Plex coming to new Apple TV http://www.neowin.net/news/plex-is-coming-to-the-new-apple-tv

Few random thoughts:

Plex means the ability to play video from my diskstation NAS - yay
Wonder about the remote and HDMI-CEC - I hear it is a bag of hurt
Wonder about hd homerun's coupled o a tivo/mysky type app?

If the likes of tvnz and tv3 would write a channel (or kodi for that matter) then this problem would have gone away years ago.

billgates: No 4K on latest apple tv is missing the boat big time especially when the new iPhone shoots 4K. House of cards etc already offers 4K with many more Netflix shows updating to 4K soon.

Which other streaming box has 4K? And how on earth are they going to transfer that to a 4K TV with any kind of futureproofing?

There are plenty of android ones that will stream 4k video. Only need HDMI 1.4 to get it at 24/25/30 Hz, HDMI 2.0 gets you to 60 Hz so is acceptable for gaming (but it seems 30 is acceptable in the console world anyway)

2 years back, no 4k would be fine. Now its as absurd on a brand new product.

Why ?
I can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080p on my HD tv.

I also don't see me "upgrading" my TVs for the next 5-10 years

Hell, I still buy DVDs, not blueray.

4K TV is right up there with the special ethernet cables that audiophiles use.

I don't get this either. I worked in broadcast TV when the HD switchover happened. That was a big difference because at the same time there was a move to 16:9 along with a significant resolution improvement, sort of like going from black and white to colour.

I like good quality media both technically and in content but IMO, 4k is nowhere near as exciting. I put it on par with TV companies trying to sell you a bigger and bigger screen, even 3D TVs... Sure it makes a difference but to the average person it's a non issue. And wanting it because your phone shoots 4K, that's not a good reason.

There won't be the same universal push to upgrade to 4K with networks like there was with the initial HD upgrade. Even then that was hard work. To sell TV's there has to be life after 1080 and 4K is the TV makers answer, kind of like 3D but 4K should actually stay... 8K is around the corner so who knows how long 4K's life will be anyway!

And one thing I notice with Apple is they execute present technology well which is all that matters to me.

Problem is to get the benefit of 4k you need a big screen. And tv is not made for a big screen which is why it looks so dumb we large.

apple tv question -

if you remove chromecast features ( streaming web, youtube, and media from comp ) , and remove paid stuff ( netflix ittunes etc ), how much of FREE content is available.

Can it be a replacement for sky ?

pls give me some idea cause my friend has bought one and i feel tempted to have one , but clearly i dont know if its just a paper weight or if it will do something good for me.

Doesn't it have TV3 on there?  Being the first of the NZ providers?  Or does that count as chromecast

Well having owned an Apple TV for some weeks now, my views are somewhat mixed.

I have ripped my DVDs onto my Mac mini so it acts as an iTunes server as well as a iPhoto etc server.

It accesses the network via Wireless to an airport express (latest version) which is hooked up via a gigabit switch
to everything else.

The ATV4 regularly looses connection to the iTunes server requiring the ATV to be restarted.

The ATV4 regularly stalls when playing media from the Mac mini requiring to back out of the current video and reentering it.

The TV3 App is bah, who cares, limited content worth watching.

No TVNZ (TV1/TV2) or TV4 etc channels yet and No Neon or Lightbox yet, though there is Netflix.

Not a lot of useful Apps, not bothered with the games.

New remote requires a bit of getting used to. Undecided about it, there are nice features however being able to just hold down a button and scroll down long lists using the old remote is more useful.

HATE the new input method of scrolling A-Z.

Like the ability to change TV volume with the new remote

Like when we turn the TV off the ATV turn off too.

My old ATV3 was more stable, and to be honest preferred the Netflix App on the ATV3 to the one on the ATV4

The ATV4 has much more potential, its just not there yet.

Tbh I think you'd be better served with plex on your Mac rather than trying to rely on iTunes. Or possibly the infuse app.

Yes, try Plex. The app is free.

I got mine mainly because of the potential of the app store to make it the one box to rule them all, so I just have to be patient now. I'm pretty happy with it already, but can't wait for more content providers to get their stuff sorted.

Does it work without a Plex Pass subscription?

I tried using Plex on my PS4 last week, to stream the content from my local Plex server. But it informed me I needed to sign up to a paid Plex subscription in order to do this.
