Low viewership is because the app on the samsungs is a laggy piece of crap, on the PS3 it seldom works, and who wants to watch on a phone without the ability to cast to a larger screen.

Android app wont work on a set top box because of their paranoia over rooting and HDMI output. So that leaves hulu/BBC iplayer/itv etc as the ideal source for that same content. Which they will never see the use of so think there is no demand.

Cant expect demand when the platform is so crap at the moment. Apple TV box would let them have it nativly on a TV without their fear of android and HDMI out getting in the way.

Last month - 5,834,455 streams.  Average duration 28 minutes.  So your views on demand (and lack therefore) are baseless.

The big problem is that 35,000 views per week for the top programs (or 200,000 views per day across all programs) doesnt justify for a lot of development given the minimal advertising load on those programs.

Its not the quantum of use - its now the lack of growth.  Duration not growing and streams now in decline.  The minimal number of advertisements probably barely covers the cost of the content.  The revenue earnt would appear not to justify moving the content from SD to HD - which is probably more important to sustain viewership than adding a new platform (which probably has revenue share requirements).

But, as I said before, the recent decline in usage may be the impetus for TVNZ to develop new platforms - it needs to find reach elsewhere (where it didnt need to waste resources on development previously).

I didn't realise till this morning that it doesnt Airplay. I was going to see how worthwhile it is and locate it next to Fanpass on my iPad for Airplay to TV. . At least the latter is going to get to the ATV4 to add value and viewing options.

Yes, some nonsense about viewing rights not allowing them to display it to a TV screen, which seems crazy given the PS3 and smart TV apps enable them to do just that. I would watch so much stuff on TVNZ OnDemand if they'd make it easier for me to do so. Of all the TV-channel-based On Demand services, they actually have the largest range of viewing that's attractive to me. Instead, I'm using BBC, Hulu, All4 and Aussie On Demand services to watch the same shows, because they're either on my ATV or I can Airplay them to it.

The app looks quite ok, solid content. Duke. But not allowed to watch on my TV, only on my iPad. They said no airplay is due to rights issues. How? I had the rights to watch an ep last week, why not today? They arent losing revenue from me if I watch on my iPad outside of my TV room as its FTA. So, I can watch in another city on my iPad but not in my home on the telly? I don't follow the mindset on that

Geez. Must be rights with Sony and Samsung? Thats the only thing that seems likely. We've all seen the crazy threads on geo unblocking, rights, et, etc. But for FTA to favour a brand or two? Getting a larger viewership which in some cases might translate to loyalty, or at least favourable perception. For a TV station, VIEWERS is what its about.

No, advertisers is what it is all about. Viewers are what they sell them. If you have not enough people wanting to buy the viewers views then there is no point putting the content on a platform for viewers since people wont pay enough for those views.

NZ advertising's grasp of online is weak at best. Look at how many places just load up their 30 second TV spots onto youtube and pay for them as a skippable pre-roll and you have no idea what it is for in those first 5 seconds.

I think you'll find that Samsung paid for development - and in return got exclusivity.  Playstation may be the same given its on the PS3/4 (and only HD on the PS4) and not the Xbox.  Under the guise of FreeviewPlus (which TVNZ has an interest in developing) it broadens to more TV brands.  Again the $$$ talk.

Thats what I meant. More viewers = more desirable the advertising is.

So no Airplay or Chromecast till this deal expires? Foolish. Take TV's. How often do we upgrade a TV? How many of those own late model Samsungs? Who is gonna use a PS3/4 to watch TV? If it was located at the TV permanently, what a hassle. Exclusive can and does work in the right circumstances to add value to a brand, but in this case it drops what I assume is a massive % of available viewers.
