bleater: I don't know if any of the rest of you are registered iPhone developers, but breath easy, Xcode is installing my provisioned code-signed apps onto the jailbroken, activated and unlocked iPhone w/2.0 firmware just fine.

Nice to know.  I'm a registered developer but haven't yet completed anything.  I admit I was mildly worried about using a Jailbroken phone as a dev platform :)

If you are on anything other than a Vodafone iPhone plan, use "Enable data on any SIM". This will set the APN to "www.vodafone.net.nz". Beware, if you're on prepay, the casual data rate is currently $10/MB, so simply loading the Vodafone homepage will burn through $5. Yay for NZ's third-world mobile phone data regimes.

THANKYOU GEEKZONERS!!

It worked...the mistake I made was selecting "legit user" during the process. My 2.5g 8gb is now up and running on 2.0.

Thanks again to all those who helped me. This might seem a little over-effusive, but I was looking at a $650 paper weight all morning and feling unwell. Now I'm well happy and i can carry on teaching calculus to my students with a skip in my step :)

Hmmm strange.  Pwnage tool won't "unlock" the 3G, it will just jailbreak so you can run apps.
If you didn't have network service before, you won't have it after Pwnage on a 3G.

i could make calls and send SMS right up until i jailbroke it.
i had to set it back to factory settings to be able to do it again.
I really just want/need to know how to jailbreak it and keep being able to send SMS and calling.
