I’m interested to know what sort of stuff you use the pencil for.
Doodling around, some sketching which I suck at oh and throwing at the cat when its sleeping on the coffee table.
To be honest more money than sense in buying it, for $219 I don't use it that much.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

eracode: Might be cool if they enabled the iPhone screen to be a trackpad for iPad. š
And thats not silly. Enhance the Apple everything sales pitch.
I have a Pro 12.9, love it but hardly use it, I have it only for SVOD. My Winter time binging tool

Pretty sure this would be me if I bought one.
I will obviously still get one.
Item: I just went through a big upgrade and downsizing push.
Old iMac and 18 month old MacBook Pro is gone and I have a high end windows
PC plus new 11” iPad Pro 512gb for all my computing and media needs.
No regrets - love it: performance and battery life are excellent and as someone with clammy hands who sometimes struggled with Touch ID, I have been pleasantly surprised and just how good Face ID is.
You can now apparently get a dongle for macs, that allow you to use an ipad pro as a second retina monitor. Apparently it doesn't work with windows, but it could be an option for people downsizing and not having space for lots of computer equipment.
I find face ID a bit of a pain on the ipad pro and not as convenient as touch ID. Often it says my face is too far away, because unlike an iphone, you do use an ipad further away from your face. Also the camera is often covered by the hand. But at least it works in all directions unlike the iphone. I do feel they decided to use face ID solely because underscreen fingerprint sensors didn't really exist at the time the iphone X came out, so wouldn't be surprised if they didn't go to an underscreen sensor eventually. I do however like how the ipad pro has features that aren't even available on the most expensive iphones, including promotion, which makes everything so smooth.

And was it?
I want a pen, I prefer it to a finger, but no way am I paying that!

Went back and forth on either an iPad Pro 10.5" or 11". Ultimately, I settled on the 10.5".
Adding in the Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard, I paid roughly $1380 in total for the Pro 10.5" 256GB Wifi model from Apple Refurbished.
I would be paying $2170 for the Pro 11" 256GB equivalent, with Pencil 2 and Keyboard Folio.
A difference of $790. I made a list of features the 11" had over the 10.5" (Slimmer bezels, USB-C, A12X, Magnetic charging with Pencil 2, Face ID is more of a sidegrade, imo)
I couldn't justify paying an extra $790 for just those improvements. That's not far from the price of another iPad Pro 10.5" alone.
I'm still getting the main benefits of a pro model (120Hz ProMotion, Quad speakers) but just paying a far lower price. And I've still got a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Hell, I'm still shaking my head in disapproval for even considering plonking down $2K for an iPad but that's just me.

The downside you didn't mention is that the pro 10.5 will very likely have fewer future iOS updates, so it's life will potentially be 1-2 years less than the pro 11 if not more. This however is entirely controlled by the manufacturer, so they may support it for longer. The pro 2018 models are also supposedly get more features in the next ios version, as at the moment the hardware is wasted on the current ios version, as multiapp usability is really poor compared to the surface. Noone knows if apple will also offer that to other, or older models. But they do appear to want there to be a point of difference between their models. I had heard that mouse support could be added to the 2018 pros which could be a big benefit to many who are using it for graphics work. Being a 11 inch screen, it does also have a slightly larger screen than a 10.5 inch screen, and also has a decent camera, almost as good as the current iphone XR one, so you can do those portrait shots. Also you forgot animoji's on the pro 2018 models, which don't come with any other ipad models that I am aware of !

The 10.5 is really nice especially with all the extra kit you can pick up with it at that price!

I'm not too worried about updates. Apple tends to support their devices for long time and while the A12X in the 11" will probably be supported longer, it's not like the A10X in the 10.5" will suddenly combust once Apple stops releasing iOS updates for it. It'll still be perfectly usable. Hell, my mum uses an iPad Air 2 still and it works great. The camera and animojis aren't important to me. And the camera in the 10.5" has OIS, whereas that has been omitted in the 2018 iPad Pros which is weird.
There have been rumours of more desktop features like mouse support and proper file management since the original iPad Pro came out in 2015.
While Apple have made small progress with iOS 11's dock and multitasking features and now with USB-C, I still feel that we are quite a ways off with iPad being a laptop replacement.
It's hard to comment on rumours, and as long as Apple still has a Mac line I doubt we'll see iPad adapt a full desktop experience. It makes more sense to sell customers a Mac and an iPad from Apple's perspective.
Basically, for the tasks I currently do on iOS I can't justify dropping $2K on a 2018 iPad Pro for what I consider quality of life improvements. There needs to be more desktop feature support like mouse and external drives where I will be able to do more heavier work on iPad without excessive workarounds or limitations. Once that happens, Apple can have my whole wallet.
