NEW APPLE TV RUMOURS:

Apple are well known for running a tight ship, and not allowing information on new hardware etc. to be leaked to the public, until they are ready to make an announcement. However there are several "Apple Insiders" who make a living out of posting new rumours on Apple products.

The latest from the rumour mill, is that there will be a new Apple TV released sometime this year, and will include the new video codec H.266.

H.266: Versatile Video Encoding (VVC)

Fraunhofer HHI, the company behind the H.264 and H.265 video codecs, has unveiled (6 July 2020) its latest creation: the aptly-named H.266. Just as the world has finally gotten around to adopting HEVC/H.265, we get a newer version that will offer the same quality at about half the file size.

H.266 video encoding—also called Versatile Video Coding (VVC)—promises to usher in a new era of lightweight 4K streaming, not to mention the possibility of recording 8K video and high-res 360° formats without having to acquire boatloads of storage in the process.

Apple TV: tvOS 14.5 to support both 24.000fps and 23.976fps.

3 years after Apple TV gained support for 'match content', tvOS 14.5 will implement the holy grail of frame rate matching; support for fractional AND integer frame rates, i.e. both 24.000fps and 23.976fps, for improved video playback without dropped frames.

Here is a nice concept: Concept: How Apple could combine the best of HomePod, Apple TV, and iPad to create the perfect smart display

As long as it had the connectivity of: wired (Ethernet, HDMI, USB) and wireless (WiFi, Bluetooth, Airplay) all the latest (and past) versions.

Able to handle all the latest (and past) Audio and Visual codec's and formats. Maybe even the Apple USB SuperDrive.

International HomeKit/automation standards and connectivity.

This could then be your One-Stop-Shop in your home. Bring it in at a reasonable price with maybe an entry level hardware and a pro level hardware.

Would this likely fix the Audio Sync issue in the Amazon Prime Video app?

Well it seems a new Apple TV is getting closer as: Apple Removes 'Siri Remote' Mentions in tvOS 14.5 Beta, Changes 'Home' Button Name

This wait is getting painful.

I received an email from Apple today, inviting me to log in to an Apple event on 21st April at 5.00 am, on Apple.com.

Could this be the news we've been waiting for?

No. Next week's event is most likely to be 90% about iPad and 10% about AirTags/other.

I still don't understand what everyone wants from a new Apple TV – is it just 8K that's missing?

8k is being pushed whether consumers want it or not, but it's looking likely that Apple wants a slice of the casual gaming market, instead of treating it like an afterthought. They have pretty capable hardware, so why not?

Considering that my old Apple TV will no longer play back YouTube... it's time I upgraded.

I've been waiting patiently and living with the XBox (to be fair the Series X is nice and quick)... but I'm keen to drop some money! Especially if I can swap some Airpoints for it on Air NZ's store.

New Apple TV announced this morning, main points I picked up:

* Same looking device but running an A12 chip

* New look remote (can you get this for the older devices?)

* Support for Higher Frame Rates

* Can run an app on your iphone (12 and up) to help with colour balance on the TV

Beaten to it by Djshadow but here it is anyway:

NEW Apple TV 4K 6th Generation -  Apple (NZ)

https://www.apple.com/nz/apple-tv-4k/

The only question I have is "Does Siri now work in NZ"?? The Tech spec say it does.

YES and I am buying. I have waited long enough.

Is it worth an upgrade from the previous gen Apple TV 4K? My feeling at this stage is no, but would love to get that new remote.
