CYaBro:

johno1234:

Following on from my whinge on the Fire TV Stick thread, having a look at Apple TV devices. Lots of 4th Gen Apple TV devices for sale on TM for crazy prices... many for the same price as a new Apple TV HD!

According to skysportnow they only support 4th Generation version. Shows how bad they are at device support when they don't even mention the Apple TV HD model.

The 4th gen Apple TV includes the Apple TV HD model.

Sorry I used the wrong term. I meant Apple TV 4K  - the new model, that has the A15 chip and 64Gb... it is $10 more expensive than some of the vendors on TM are asking for the 4th Gen model with A8 chip and 32Gb?

Apple TV 4th generation IS the Apple TV HD. 4th gen was renamed to TV HD when the 4k model came out. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT200008

Just an update on HDR10+ availability on Apple TV 4K (Gen. 1 & 2).

HDR10+ will only be available on Apple TV 4K (Gen. 3). You may see the HDR10+ logo in the store, but it will not play back on the older Apple TV 4K machines.

I still cannot work out why anyone with a TV bought in the past 5 years really needs an Apple TV unit at all. What is it actually for?

I bought my ATV4 in April 2016 after my HTPC died.

With it I can watch football from Norway and Sweden. Netflix, BBC and All4 from the UK, as well as US, Australian and NZ channels by simply creating an appleID in each country and installing whichever app I need.

No fuss, no hassle and works perfectly with my harmony rf hub.

I buy a tv for the quality of the screen, I'm not interested their smarts at all.

Can you just switch your Apple ID to a different country, download the apps you want, then switch it back to the original country? i.e. NZ Apple ID, change it's region to UK, download Iplayer, change ID region back to NZ and Iplayer is now loaded so you are good to go.

Saves the hassle with multiple ID's no?

You can’t switch your Apple ID to a different country but you can creat multiple IDs in different countries. The advantage of the ATV is you can have multiple accounts logged in at the same time. Switch. Tween them and download the apps from other countries. But once you’ve downloaded those apps you can remained logged in to your NZ account no still watch overseas content.

Folks. Please don’t post about content unblocking outside of the private forums. That is also off topic for here.

Short and sweet: clearly the ATV 4K 128GB, why?

Only this model
- has WiFi AND Ethernet
- is a border router for matter* (and has the necessary thread hardware the 64GB version doesn‘t have!)
- costs insignificantly more than the 64GB version, but has more resources for the additional smart home tasks

Also, compared to the previous generation

- HDR10+
- significantly cheaper
- fanless design
- significantly lighter

*matter is the new, unified, multi-vendor smart home standard (>360 manufacturers and all major market leaders) that was launched in Amsterdam earlier this month. Many existing components will receive their first matter-update on 12.12.2022 and will then be officially online. Ikea has replaced its Tradfri gateway with the new Dirigera gateway, which is already available for purchase here in Europe (all existing Tradfri components can still be used with it). Of course, as a border router for matter it can also control all other matter-certified smart home devices from the other manufacturers (i.e. hue or eve or whatever is certified) - or instead, the new ATV 4K 128GB can do for example, if you need/have one anyway you save a power eating additional appliance or you can have more than one (or different) border router for better radio coverage in the house.

- NET: FTTH, OPNsense, 10G backbone, GWN APs, ipPBX
- SRV: 12 RU HA server cluster, 0.1 PB storage on premise
- IoT:   thread, zigbee, tasmota, BidCoS, LoRa, WX suite, IR
- 3D:    two 3D printers, 3D scanner, CNC router, laser cutter
