CNZ:

IOS 18 is officially launched but still not locking onto RCS according to About settings.

Thinking its an Apple thing rather than the telcos because it works on basically any Android.

iOS 18 isn't officially out until Tuesday (the 17th).

I don't believe any of the NZ providers support RCS. "Google RCS" is effectively a different thing (it sidesteps the phone companies and uses Google's own servers).

I just updated my work iPhone 15 Pro Max; there is no option for RCS for OneNZ.

So, RCS will be determined by which carrier in NZ offers it. I guess we will miss out on this feature

How do I check for this? Interested to know whether it's available with 2d.

(Just noticed @Behodar said above that there's doubts whether any NZ telcos will offer it.)

Go to Settings > Apps > Messaging, and it should be in this area, but I can't see it, or go to General > About > Then go down to Service Provider, when you tap it, it should show Voice & SMS + RCS, Mine only shows Voice & SMS

iPad Pro 11" + iPhone 15 Pro Max + 2degrees 4tw!

These comments are my own and do not represent the opinions of 2degrees.

It's not like it was a surprise release...

Thanks - that is where I looked before asking - but yeah, nah, nothing there.

Same as you in 'Service Provider'.

I'm quite bummed about this - one of the few iOS18 features I was looking forward to (haven't been running beta).

The EU mandated that all carriers there needed to offer it, which proves that regulation is necessary to get carriers on board. (This comment is across all carriers here in NZ, not just 2D)

Also, Apple could have set up its own RCS servers (Like Google) but only did the bare minimum, and passed that issue on to the carriers (They only offered it to avoid a fine and them being forced to open up iMessage for all to use)

It's fine. It was expected, no esim for wearables either. Lagging way behind now.

Are there actually any carriers that offer RCS in NZ, or are Android devices here just using the Google fallback RCS service?

Android devices are using the Google services in New Zealand.

That may mean we may not see iOS 18+ RCS support in NZ until the carriers offer it themselves? Or at least the NZ carriers update carrier settings to utilise Google RCS? Another example of why RCS is such a mess, and cannot be compared to SMS in terms of simplicity.
