Are you sure it's not a design defect with the particular third party app that is affected?

If you've ruled that out then maybe your next step is to log a support ticket with Apple to get some specialised advice.

that is why I am gun shy on doing changes like that.

And yet you're entertaining a factory reset which is far more drastic and disruptive.  The option exists for your purpose but horse + water ≠ drink I guess

Probably not since now notifications don't occur with Whatsapp and Google Home. So it's llike to be an system wide issue.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

OK fixed it. Following the thought it was an app related issue, deleted Google Home and re-installed it. No data loss since all it does is monitor and alert when cameras detect movement and since she uses my Google account for Home, all the data came back okay and alerts started again.

Emboldened by that success then worked on Whatsapp, first backing up all the chats to iCloud which appears to be the default option.  Then deleted Whatsapp, installed it again, restored the chats and notifications returned!

Finally the big one - WeChat. WeChat only has one backup mechanism - WeChat for Windows so installed that, connected it to the phone and backed up all the chats. That took a while since she has tons of chat history, most of it audio chats.

Then deleted the app, installed it back, restored the chats and all the chats are back and notifications work.

What a relief.

As an aside, what happens if you are a Wechat user in a house that does not have Windows and you get into this situatiion? Phone a friend?
