Oddly, there are reports of download speeds clustered around a rather narrow band of 115-117 kbps on the vodafone 3G network. I've found this as well on a 3GS at various points in downtown Dunedin. Turning the phone off and on again gives download speeds of 300 kbps - 1.1 Mbps, but this only lasts for around 30 minutes, then it's back to 115-117 kpbs. Uploads are 200-400 kpbs in all cases.

You can get the same results by turning 3g off and on again..

I've found and I think others have mentioned this too that if the iPhone drops from 3g to GPRS and back to 3g again, the max speed you'll get is around 110kbps downstream.

I wonder if there's any fix for this?

I'd switch to XT for faster speed, but I'm a bit wary of making changes that most likely will break tethering in version 3.1 of the phone OS. A few extra dollars doesn't concern me.

Typically lucky to get 100kbs from Vodafone with FULL signal strength on 3G
I have also performed the test to switch off and then switch on 3G and does not make a difference.

I realise that this is not the device as I did once get 820 down (from same location as most of other tests) and also an odd 281kbs down and on another occasion 311 up...

worst was that the ping times are also poor

now I'm in china and use china unicom 3G 2100mhz. full bar 3G signal. speed download 700k, upload speed 250 k. not bad at all. in rangiora i got 115k download without any hack. vodafone sucks. it's even worse than the crappy china unicom. lol. I haven't lost signal yet here. 2100mhz is way better here than vodafone nz.

Yes, that was non-sensical.

But he was right though. You can be better off on XT:

150 TXTs - $6
240Mb data - $18
20 minutes of calling - $18

$18 + $18 + $6 = $42, but if you can afford to top up $60 at a time, then that would only be $31.50 per month (25% discount with $60 top ups).

Even if you could only afford the $20 at a time, then you would be paying $33.60 per month (20% discount for $20 top ups).

And remember, those prices all presume that you are making 20 minutes of calls. If you make LESS then you save even more each month, as the VF minutes are not "rolled over" or refunded if you don't use them in a month.

The bad thing about XT is how their prepaid plans are SO MUCH BETTER than their on account plans, at least at the low end of the market.

Hopefully nothing a jailbreak can't fix.

So what is the consensus here? I am a new 3G owner looking for a network for my phone.

XT or Vodafone?
