I guess the 850mhz could use more power (I dont know anything about the networks usage etc) I am just saying it could be possible that it uses more than Vodafones 2100mhz network.

My bluetooth is off also and my usage has been 1hr 31mins today with 4hrs 46mins standby (Which is wrong as i turned my phone off) and I am down to about 82% I have wasted a fair bit today when turning my phone off and on and switching between wifi and 3G testing a few things

I found this on the many many many complaints on apple.com forums.
Going to try it tomorrow.

FOLLOW THESE STEPS TO SOLVE YOUR BATTERY PROBLEMS FOR IPHONE 3GS. There is a 70% CHANCE THIS WILL SOLVE IT. PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU WILL LOSE DATA BY DOING THIS SO BACK IT UP. BE WARNED. THIS MIGHT NOT HELP IF YOU HAVE A HARDWARE BATTERY ISSUE.

1. Drain your iPhone battery.

2. conect your iPhone to PC/MAC and SYNC your iPhone pics, contacts, email, songs, videos, etc. to keep them backed up. DO NOT USE THE BACKUP FEATURE ON ITUNES.

3. connect your iPhone to wall charger with USB CABLE and go to your iPhone Settings -> General -> Reset -> Erase all content and settings.

4. wait for it to reset, this might take over 1-2 hours depending on how much data you got.

5. Once reset is done immediatelly connect iPhone to MAC/PC and run iTunes. Perform RESTORE.

6. When restore is done make sure to SET-UP iPhone as a NEW phone. DO NOT USE RESTORE FROM BACKUP!!

7. wait untill your iPhone is fully 100% charged. Then test the battery. It should be all good now. If not then your battery needs replacement.

8. If it is all good you can go ahead and sync your phone. But DO NOT USE RESOTRE FROM BACKUP.

9. post results on forum.

this worked for me i get about 6 hours of battery for wi-fi + edge & some audio.

I heard that the lower the frequency, the lower the power usage - then again I may have this fact backwards!
But, the thing is: 3G technology uses more power than 2G GSM.

Newguy:
My screen brightness has been at about 90% should i try it down a bit?
Should that increase the battery life?

My screen brightness is set to the factory default: 50% and it's perfectly fine inside and out (I guess thanks to the auto brightness setting that I have on.
But to answer your question - yes the higher the screen brightness setting, the lower the battery life. The screen brightness is high up there on the battery drainage culprit list if not the highest!

Without an OLED screen, the screen is basically the biggest drain on any device bar a large processor at full speed

I believe that quite a few on the apple forums have found it to work. Check for your self. It seems to be indicating that by copying settings etc from your old 3G phone to your new 3GS may in fact lead to excessive battery useage. Time will tell.  There is also a very large amount of measurement going on within the apple 3GS forums.

I have been up since 7:30 this morning, and i have sent about 20 txts had a 10minute phone call, been on the net and use the courier app. Still at 100%.

This is due to having the Screen brightness down, Wifi is on, 3G on, Location on.

I used the 3g and am now using the 3gs. I pretty much am using them exactly the same - in fact, I'm probably using the 3gs more intensely (bluetooth headset, location services on, always in 3g mode compared to switching to2g when I was with Vodafone)

Without a doubt, the 3Gs battery is lasting a lot longer. Without a doubt.

Wow - what a difference a weekend makes!! I was getting brilliant battery life up until Saturday. But since then, it goes from 100% at 10pm, to being fully drained by morning!!!!

I believe I know what caused this - on Saturday, I did some work in the sunroom (it was a nice day)

I left the phone on the table in the sunroom for a few hours - it was heated up by the sun.

Since then I'm getting TERRIBLE battery life.

Something about the battery being heated causes it to die ALOT quicker.

Not too sure what to do. Am going to try get a replacement with Digital Mobile sometime today.
