Hmm

Anyone else noticed a very poor battery life on the 3GS compared to the 3G?
I have turned off wifi and other services but it is still very poor.

Well your wrong lol. Although the battery is only 6% larger the hardware and software draws less from the battery also, you are prob gaming alot on the 3gs which will use alot more battery when compared to the 3G

Many others have noticed poor battery life, and it's been talked about on numerous intl forums around the net. Seem to be two camps: those that have remarkably poor battery life and those who are experiencing better-than-3G battery life. The search continues for the reason, although some are saying the 3.1 update will improve things for those having issues.

I personally have noticed an improvement. Typically I used to get lest than a day before Id have to recharge my old 3G which I had since launch day last year.

Now with the 3Gs it lasts at least 1 1/2 days.

Check all your settings.

Mine is on push mail,( 30 min) wifi is on when im at home

Yesterday for instance it last 1 1/2 days even after doing multiple video clips in the afternoon. I got down to 8% late yesterday pm after initially charging it Friday morning at 8.30 am.

So there as you report been a fair amount of variation-but you wander on peoples usage and their settings

Have a look on a forum such as :http://groups.yahoo.com/group/apple-iphone/ where im a mod. Search in their archives for threads on this topic.

What do people consider "good" battery life? Phones are something these days that you reastically charge on a daily basis.

Well my Nokia N73 lasts about a week without a charge so that is what I think is good battery life.
I use it every day too but only to make calls/send texts and it stays on 24/7.
I have turned off 3G mode though as don't need it and this is what sucks the battery juice.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

My E71 has one of the biggest batteries available on any handset (i1500mAh) and I can get about  1 1/2 days from it (not turning it off at night). This is with a lot of voice, WiFi and 3G data connections during the day.

I charge it every night just because I typically won't get two days out of  it.

Yeah, I typically stick my phone on the charger when I go to bed each night regardless of what the battery level is. Even when out of town and overseas I am never more than about 12 hours away from somewhere with an electrical outlet so a battery that can keep my phone going for 7 days is of no more use to me than one that lasts for 1 day!

In saying that, I haven't really noticed too much of a difference in battery life between my 3G and my 3GS although that's possibly because I use push notifications with the 3GS whereas I didn't with the 3G...

Wouldn't this screw up the battery though? (i.e. reduce the overall capacity of it?)

With Lithium Ion technology this is not so important as compared to Nicad with its memory effect.

I have also seen reports that the battery can last around the 400 cycles mark !!!! Think this is anecdotal at present.

When I find the data Ill report back.

Well my 3G iphone has great battery life I usually charge it once a week, if I do a lot of email/internet use on it it would last me 3 days before having to recharge, I always let it run flat before recharging. My HTC Titan I would be swapping the battery every other day it was annoying.

Turning off locations services has a MASSIVE effect on improving battery life on the 3GS.

ill do another full charge (2nd charge) and hope it improves.
