Nah they didn't even ask. Plus I had it spilling out everywhere, had to buy a second suitcase and was carrying the HP MediaSmart server as hand luggage!

At least iPads would be easier to pack!

corksta:
marmel: I'd be keen for a 16gb wifi model but how are you going to get on bringing them back through customs?

It's hit and miss.

In 2008 on a trip to San Francisco I bought about US$1000 worth of gadgets, declared that I was bringing in more than the personal concession of NZ$700, but was never asked about it by Customs.

Having said that I could buy several iPads then get stung paying GST, so yeah, hit and miss.

My job involves a lot of travel around the world and part of my job is dealing with customs on arrival in different ports.
It pays to read the customs website on GST and DUTY charges as they can seem very complicated.
Remember that GST is not the only charge you could get stung with, there are also DUTY charges, e.g. if you bring in a motorbike helmet, i think you get charged DUTY something stupid like 50% of the price.  Everything has a different duty charge.  It all about the effect on NZ, Safety equipment is charged heavily because they want to discourage it.

The good think for geekzone people is i don;t think there is a duty charge on electronics.
The golden rule for customs is that they will not collect on fees that total less than $50.

So for example - Your personal concession comes to a total of $800.  If there is not duty charges you will only have to pay the GST on the amount over $700.  So for $800 you would be charged for $800 - $700 = $100, $100 * 12.5% = $12.50.
$12.50 is less than $50 so they won't collect.

So the most you could bring in without be charged is $1,092, $1,092 - $700 = $392, $392 * 12.5% = $49 (less than $50)

Then again if you don't mind paying charges, 3 iPads at $800 = $2,400, $2,400 - $700 = $1,700, $1,700 * 12.5% = $212.50
$212.50 / 3 = $70.80 per iPad.

Also just remember that pretty much anything you buy and bring back is part of your consession, e.g toothpaste, clothes, perfumes etc

Just remember you could try and jip the system but if you get caught it's your arse on the line.

In the past I have brought back close to $2,000 worth of equipment and declared it all to customs with receipts ready to pay the duty and they waived me thru, i was just lucky but so could you.

Hopefully that helps.

Just be warned that this is my understanding of customs charges, i may be mistaken in some of my calculations and therefore i take no responsibility with the accuracy of the information provided.  (In short if customs want to put a finger up your bum, don't come crying to me!!!)

Thanks Fabian, my wife is a flight attendant and I travel a lot as well so am aware of all that. Most electronics attract GST of 12.5%, as per Customs' web site.

Well I guess this all but confirms that we aren't getting the iPad the same time as Australia.

Go to http://www.apple.com/nz and then go to http://www.apple.com/au and observe the difference...

Ouch.

Oh well, people shouldn't be too gutted, since the prices here will be through the roof.

Sounds like ToshComputers would be reasonably priced at $899 then?

When are they getting them though?

*goes to look*
