i seem to remember that back when 3gs was released, apple online store only started selling them after few weeks, and vodafone would only sell the phone outright through online stores. So i think it will be the same this time round.

Forgive me for straying off topic but the Apple store is down in the US too, so I doubt it's regarding the iPhone. It's probably for the rumored speedbumped Mac products.

Doesn't the press release say you will be able to order online at the Apple store this time around?

For anyone interested, the outright price for the 16GB from Apple Australia is AUD $859 = NZD$1,055, i.e essentially the same. 

The handset prices on plans announced by Telstra, Optus, Vodafone and 3 are, however, somewhat more depressing.
