oxnsox: It's all transitional hype anyway, right now it's the Telcos who can analyse data usage and try and predetermine plans that best encompass the way people use the devices (I doubt options like 1000 txts, or similar, a month were a stab in dark...)

In time people won't be focused on data caps sizes as they'll simply be sufficient for their needs. Their real concern will be on getting the right device that meets their personal social/business networking needs.

I agree, if they can come up with packages that suit most normal uses then it's only the very heavy or specialist users that need to worry and as a small group they can be managed and educated as necessary.

Unfortunately having worked in the industry I've seen it floundering for 10 years to get it right. I hope it happens soon. I think it will now that data usage is becoming very much the norm on a handset.

I don't think you can get much clearer than that!

LOL - Don't get me started on the stupidity of a charging model where you charge based on something that your customer's dont understand and have no easy way of measuring. :)

Ask any person how much data is transferred for a given activity and very few will have any real idea. Just think how many customer calls / complaints this leads to.

It's a flawed billing model.

and what do you propose as an alternative?

it;s the way utilitie shave been charged for ages - water, electricity, gas, telephone calls all use the same basic model.

Do most people have any idea how much electricity their fridge uses? Nope, but they still get electricity billed by the kilowatt hour

Do most people have any idea how much water is used when they flush their toilet or have a shower? Nope, but they still get water billed by the cubic metre

Do most people have any idea how much gas is used to cook a bacon sandwhich or have their fire on for an evening? Nope, but they still get billed by the cubic metre.

If anything data is the best of the lot. although you get billed for usage in the same way as the others, at least when you are downloading large files you do have a very good idea of how much data is being used - it tells you on the screen as you are doing it.

I'm not talking about running an iPhone on XT, that obviously ok.

I'm looking for reasons why Telecom hasn't picked up a dual distro with Apple. How come VF has managed to keep all the iPhone rights even after XT rolled out. Isn't XT supposed to be a better system and newer tech than the VF backbone?

Vodafone Inc is a very large company so Vodafone NZ piggyback on their buying power for this sort of stuff For Telecom NZ (a small company buy world standards) to do this sort of thing they would have to join some buying cartel like AT&T, Rogers and Telstra in Ozz who use the same tech. Just like they did with Sprint during the CDMA days ..
