I would imagine that part of the subscription fee would trickle down to the record companies in the end?

Agreed. Also the record labels have limited changing iTunes match accounts to every 90 days, to stop mates from grabbing your music.

Just a heads up that iTunes will match songs that are lower than 128kbps IF they are VBR (Variable Bit Rate).

I subscribed yesterday and had the same issue with iTunes not matching about 50% of my library despite all appearing to be OK in terms of metadata etc.

The strangest thing was that none of the music I've purchased from iTunes was matched or is that how it's supposed to work?

All purchased music will show up as purchased (if it was lower than 256k just delete it and download the higher quality version), you can go into your view settings under itunes and select icloud status, that helped me figure out which tracks had matched and which hadn't..

One thing that annoys me though is that some tracks on an album will match but it will miss one or two of them leaving me with the original quality rip.. also having to delete the local tracks to then be able to download the AAC is a bit of a pain, it would have been better to just have a replace option.

still for $40 I'm pretty happy to have had all my old tracks upgraded to 256k AAC files :)

Match doesn't use metadata, it uses the audio fingerprinting technology they picked up of that company Lala that they bought out a couple years ago.

Ah, I see. Can't say I'm that impressed based on the initial attempt as I had nearly 50% of my library to upload.

Might try again and see if it gets a better result although it appeared to be a once only process yesterday.

There have been a lot of problems where some tracks on an album are not matched and it seems to be a server problem, which will hopefully be fixed soon.

A prime example of this is the Abbey Road album by the Beatles. In a Macworld article they said that every song except 'She Came In Through The Bathroom Window' matched in 5 out of 6 cases. Though that song matched for me so it's definitely weird.

You'll also find that song artists haven't put their music on the iTunes store yet their albums will still be matched, presuming they don't want to sell their music online but will allow people who buy the CDs to get backup downloads/higher quality versions. A good example being AC/DC, though they haven't been matched for me.
