It's only available in the US (for regulatory/legal/approval reasons I believe), and I'm not sure how much "faking" you need to do in order to get it working in NZ.
I read somewhere that it's not a simple matter of changing your region to US, but I don't have one to test that.

I've read that there's no way of spoofing the watch outside of the US, because the service is available on US-sold units only...

Although not the only one but one of the main reasons I updated from 3 to 4! humph!

I'm intrigued now. Currently working in the US, and I was thinking to buy one and send (or bring) to NZ for my father. For him the EKG feature would be particularly useful given his current condition.
I had no idea this was a region-locked feature. Now I'm wondering what happens if I buy one and wear it on my next trip home. Will it stop working when I land at Auckland? Perhaps it is based upon the home country of the iCloud user/owner of the device?
On a somewhat (un)related matter; I can confirm that my T-Mobile wifi calling on iPhone works perfectly when I'm in NZ; no roaming charges and it's just like being at my temporary home in the US.

Not exactly hidden info if you do a quick scan of a product website before buying something.

Guess it will be available here eventually
This time around, Apple has tied the availability of ECG to purchase location (presumably via serial number) instead of region or apple id settings like for other features before.

That's promising. I would put one in the Christmas box I'm about to courier, but my dad is such a technophobe I think I'll need to be there to set it up for him.
JarrodM: Finally got round to updating my watch and phone. Successfully did an ecg, of course I purchased my watch in Boston. Glad to see it was a regular heartbeat!
Just to be clear watch purchased in Boston but the ecg works here in nz?
is your apple membership set for usa or NZ?

I bought a S4 watch in LA last week - ECG is working fine now that I'm home. NZ iPhone, Apple ID, and region settings. Seems to only matter where the watch was originally purchased.

Is it safe to assume it will come to ASB next year as well?
