I love these comparisons with Android tablets "it basically does the same thing"....

Nope.

It's all about the apps you run on the device, and Android tablet apps are still way behind the curve. Out of the box stuff is all well and good, but once you run into a scenario where you have a particular "thing" you want to do on the device you're hard pressed to find an Android app in comparison to the sheer volume of iOS apps.

Would be interesting to see how the mini pans out. Though..it doesnt feel nice to be shafted considering i bought the 'old' ipad a moth ago.

I can't see a big consumer uptake but I'm usually wrong about these things. I can see this has being huge for education though, especially for the younger ones who struggle with the size of the iPad.

I think there will be a new ipad too with the new dock connector and possibly the A6 processor. It means that they can then also extend out the next big ipad update for another year.

WTF you were right! except A6X processor.

Bugger them keeping the Ipad 2 and not filtering down the Ipad3 :(

It is still an A6 procossor, but the X is just needed to run the higher resolution ipad screen compared to the iphone. So it should perform at similar speeds to the iphone 5. Pretty much everything that has been announced is what I thought these ipad updates would be, so no surprises. It would have been nice for them to release some new innovative feature, but they normally do that with the iphone. It just goes to prove with the ipad mini, that siri could be in the ipad 2, as they are basically the same spec aprt from a better camera in the mini and the lightning dock of course. But apple want there to be a point of difference between the ipad 2 and the 3S
I would feel a bit ripped off if I had purhcased an ipad 3 , and then they announced this 'new' replacement just a few months later, that is double the speed. Also has to be in the running for the most stupid name after the 'new ipad'. Now it is call Ipad with 'retina display' and is advertised as being new. The 'new ipad' also had the same retina display. Makes the new ipod touch look very expensive.

Siri is definitely enabled on the iPad mini - it's here on the Features page of the Apple site. I assume it's not a featured part of the localised (NZ) version of the website because Siri is currently fairly limited here (no rugby scores etc).

I see a big possible uptake, but mainly for the cheapest model as it will be an excellent gaming device for kids.

I wouldn't buy the ipad 1st gen mini, mainly because the screen resolution isn't high enough, and the processor is nearly two years old too. It is actually the same reason I didn't buy the new ipod touch, because some of the hardware was so old, which means that I think apple will likley drop IOS update support earlier than more powerful IOS devices. These days at that price point you would expect a retina display on a mobile device. I expect the next version will have a retina display.

As before, I'm keen on a small tablet as I'm not a fan of increasing cell phone size, as even the latest and greatest cell phone screens are still a lot smaller than a 7" tablet. Increasing cell phone size feels like going back to the bulk of the '80s bricks. That said, as above, I wouldn't buy this first ipad mini as it's clearly going to be upgraded in the fairly new future.

As I mentioned, if you are joe public, not like us ie. upgrade focussed most of the ipad 4 change is a non-issue.

Also if you plan to use it till it dies, you will get much better value (probably) from the build quality ie. product life from the ipad mini.

Yes I am not a fan of increasing cell phone size either. Anything bigger than the samsung galaxy S3 I think is too big. I you can't get it in a pocket easily and move around with it, it is to big. That is why I am surprised at how popular with new note 2 is. I would get a tablet or a mini tablet instead

Apple doesn't control the secondhand market for these devices, and certainly doesn't set the price for them.

I completely understand what you are saying, I just cannot find any logic in blaming Apple.

Fair point. Maybe instead of blaming Apple, I should blame the increased efficiency in the development of technology :P

The price of the ipad mini in NZ is weird if you compare it to the new ipod. In the US, the price difference between the new ipod and the new ipad mini is $30 US. However in NZ the price difference is only $10. I wonder if they made a pricing error on the ipod touch, as it is more expensive than the previous generation too. Not many people will buy an ipod touch, (which is largely purchased by kids to play games on) when you can get the ipad mini for just $10 more.

Also apple have said they they haven't just taken the regular ipad and made it smaller. But that is actually all they have done really, and using a larger ipod back, and reducing the bezel on two sides. In a way it is more a large ipod touch in its case, but a reduced ipad second generation in it's screen and internals.

i like the Ipad mini, would be great for my parents. was looking at getting the ipad 3 for them but since they wont use it all the time (occasional web browsing and skype) this is a perfect fit.

do like the 13' pro retina and imacs
