Signed up for an ANZ account a few weeks back just to use this, requested a debit card last Friday and it arrived today in time for the launch. Perfect timing! Totally geeking out.

In about a minute I had activated my new debit card, setup a PIN on it, then registered it for Apple Pay on my iPhone and Apple Watch. So smooth, hopefully paying with it is just as easy! Only annoying thing is that I want to go try it out, but it's spending money just for the sake of it so I'll wait until lunch tomorrow.

Has any other non-major/independent bank in Australia joined with Apple Pay yet, or mentioned doing so? I'm guessing our big banks won't be joining anytime soon, it'd be nice to use my existing Co-Op bank account with Apple Pay instead of this new ANZ one.

Brought a garden sprayer at the Warehouse. It was amazingly easy to use. Just wave the phone with my finger placed on the fingerprint sensor. No unlocking the phone, no launching an app etc. Too easy.

Anecdotally I thought it seemed to take a second or two longer to process compared to using the actual card.

I tried it once and it worked (Airpoints Platinum Visa). Still don't get the fuss over it. Have never had my CC compromised and NZ is nowhere close to having universal NFC card reader coverage, so I still have to bring my CC with me everywhere I go. In light of this, I might as well keep using my card exclusively.

It might not be a huge deal on face value, but it is. A network of terminals all with NFC facilities can't be rolled out overnight. The merchants have to have a reason to accept those payments, but if no cards or phone support it then it won't happen. It's a case of chicken or the egg basically, and in this situation NFC phones/cards needs to come before payment terminals.

You're right about the lack of universal NFC coverage in NZ, however the convenience where available is pretty great IMO. I had groceries with me today when buying Subway and usually I'd have to get out my wallet (back right-hand pocket, obviously) and then find the right card – with Apple Pay it was so easy to just use my phone which was already in my hand.

It is more convenience. I find my phone is often closer to my hands than my wallet.

I don't use a wallet. Generally, I just put grab my Visa card and my driver license when I go out, so this point doesn't influence me much at all.

Used my Apple Watch to pay for a few things at Countdown just now, I was like a Cheshire Cat when it went through. So cool! I'm sure the novelty will wear off for me shortly but I'm gonna enjoy it for now haha

Apple Pay on my OneSmart would be the ultimate way AirNZ could influence me to use their card for more than travel/international purchasing.

That is just a default error message when it doesn't get a clean read.... I've had that pop up when I have had a single carsd being physically waved at the terminal, its because that is the most common cause of a false read, so  it is displayed as the  "message for the humans"..

Used it via iPhone and Apple Watch with no issues, very quick indeed

Side note is there any other uses the "wallet" app have in New Zealand?

My Wallet App usually picks up on Air New Zealand flights (probably via the Air New Zealand App), I think it's grabbed a couple of Ticketmaster events too but don't quote me on that.

Use my Apple Watch in an independent clothing store today and it worked well. Just had to make sure it was right on top of the reader though before it registered.
