I'm just hanging out for Google Maps CarPlay support.. iOS 12 GM working nice and quickly though.

Google Maps v5 is now out and working beautifully on CarPlay.

Love that you can just get two tap access to destinations you've recently searched on the desktop or saved destinations.

The speech search uses Google's voice recognition - Siri just doesn't understand street names for me but Google picked them up perfectly.

Only wish they would show the speed limit for the current area

I've now upgraded the four iPads in our house; I'm happy to take the chance with a 12.0 release, given the benefits it brings.

As an example of the speed improvement - my son's Mini 2 was taking close to a minute to open Minecraft, but post-upgrade this is probably now around 15 seconds.

Best feature improvement I've found thus far has to be - finally - built-in support for password managers; no longer, as a user of Lastpass, do I have to open the app and copy across passwords to the browser or other app. It doesn't seem to support credit cards saved in Lastpass though, but that's a minor inconvenience.

Davy: Working perfectly well on my 6s, no lag problems at all but I'm hoping for battery usage improvements (no more dropping down from 60% to 1% in the space of half an hour, then back to 40% or so after restarting).

Well it didn't fix my battery shenanigans, but on the other hand I've had no problems with the upgrade nor have I encountered any bugs yet. All good.

Well it didn't fix my battery shenanigans, but on the other hand I've had no problems with the upgrade nor have I encountered any bugs yet. All good.

If you haven't would suggest popping into ServicePlus or local equivalent and getting battery replaced for $50 - over winter my 6S would just die as soon as I stepped outside into colder air

You may want to consider using iTunes to back up the phone and then restore it to factory settings. Put the backup back on after that and see how things go.

I'd say 12 is a huge improvement, I stayed on 10.3.3 and didn't bother with 11 due to all the issues and jumped straight to 12 beta for the entire course and have been happy with everything since and I only came across one bug which was the "New software update" bug which Apple patched rather fast. Been on 12 GM since Sunday I think and no issues yet.

Now with iOS 12 on my IPad Air 2, when I wake it with the home button, a blue bar about 15 mm long appears briefly below the battery info near the top RH corner. It’s there for a split second then disappears. Can anyone tell me what that is?

Spoken like a fully able bodied person that doesn't suffer from the likes of shaky & slow & imprecise hands due to age. And also like somebody who expects to rest of the world to 'simply know how these things work'.

Apple chooses to change they way we interact with the device. There is a learning curve associated with that change. There are many who like the way things worked previously, who want to spend their time doing other things or who simply do not want to learn another way to do the same previous action in a new way, yet again.
We all have different capabilities. These design choices bleed into the eco system and affect many other systems. Not everybody has the fine motor co-ordination to flick, swipe, twist or whatever is required in just the right place at just the right time. Just like sex & race, these young white male engineers from SF need to learn about age & disability.

In fairness to @Handsomedan the bar provides a visual cue only, it does not in any way make it functionally easier to operate for the those with shaky hands or poor fine motor co-ordination.

Yes, it is a learning curve - but not a very steep one. I'd just like to see an option to remove the training wheels. There would be zero downside.

And that was what I was getting at - a bar that intrudes on the screen makes for a less enjoyable experience and actually doesn't functionally have any benefit other than as a visual cue.

What does your Battery Health show - at a guess it could be indicating performance throttling due to aging battery?

Aha - it’s there when the iPad wakes and stays there but disappears when it’s unlocked. I knew about the ‘swipe down from top right’ but didn’t think it was an indicator for that - but now I think you’re correct.
