@WolfChop

The rumours are now pretty strong re mouse and drive support coming with iOS 13 which should be announced at Apple’s WWDC next month - with release soon thereafter.

Well after 3 days of the iPad Pro - I’m completely blown away by how good this thing is.

And here I am sitting with my new 10.5" debating whether I made the right decision or not.

A couple of members here have made me unsure of my purchase now... I can still return it to Apple within 14 days if I want.

If I am planning to stick with an iPad Pro for the next five years, perhaps going for the latest might be the best idea, considering that more support for the USB-C port will surely come.

Plus the Apple Pencil 2 magnetically latching to the device is a real convenience ...

But dang, the 2018 Pros are not cheap ... adding on at least $520 more for the Pencil 2 and Keyboard Folio.

First world problems of a tech lover -_-

The pro 11 inch isn't too badly priced if you go for the smallest storage option. Do you need all that on device storage? I got 10% off mine recently when warehouse stationary had 10% off everything. So that took it down to about $1250. Still pricey, but it is just such a nice looking modern device that is buttery smooth. Maybe I will regret only having 64GB in the future, it is impossible to know how much ios will get bloated by, as well as how large some apps may get in the future. At the moment it is only 40% full with all the apps I use.  I avoided the cases as well, and purchased a good one off aliexpress for about $30. Also I can use any bluetooth keyboard with it. I have a lenovo bluetooth tablet keyboard, which has really good keys form typing on.

Hey I just bought this and am deciding what keyboard to buy. Any recommendations? The easiest choice is the Apple one but I've read mixed reviews and it's very expensive. Struggling to find alternatives that are available to in NZ.

I just bought the Logitech Slim Folio Pr from the Apple NZ website.

https://www.apple.com/nz/shop/product/HMU92VC/A/logitech-slim-folio-pro-case-with-integrated-bluetooth-keyboard-for-11-ipad-pro?fnode=9e&fs=f%3Dipadpro_11%26fh%3D4598%252B4a96

Pros:

  1. Great Keyboard - better than the Apple one for typing
  2. Cheaper than the Apple one
  3. Backlit!
  4. Full cover/protection for the iPad, including corners. Would likely save you in a drop!
  5. Doesn't fall off like the Apple one (FFS Apple)
  6. Despite being Bluetooth, it works seamlessly - really well implemented
  7. Has user replaceable batteries! (applause)
  8. 3 Month battery life
  9. Allows for Apple Pencil either charging or tucked into a separate flap

Cons:

  1. Bulky and heavy compared to the Apple one. I wouldn't use it all the time.
  2. Charges via USB C but doesn't include USB C Cable
  3. Ugly? Maybe - open it is fine, closed it is "meh"

I have tried the Apple one:

Pros:

  1. Slim & Light
  2. "Attractive"
  3. Seamless integration via iPad connector
  4. No charging/battery needed

Cons:

  1. Overpriced
  2. Mushy keyboard
  3. falls off too easily as only held on the back by magnets
  4. No protection for corners, unlikely to help in a drop

And here we go - buried in the new iPadOS - apparently not mentioned in the keynote addresses at WWDC - but there nonetheless. Simple support for USB drives into the Files app too.

Yes can confirm the mouse support works for my USB wireless type mouse. There is an option there to connect bluetooth devices but it isn't picking anything up yet. One site said bluetooth trackpads would work so expect to see that on an update.

Damn it. Slightly regretting my iPad Pro 10.5" purchase. I think there are lightning to USB adaptors that can get around this issue but would be nice to have the new Pros for the USB-C support, as I've now started using the Samsung Portable SSD T5's as my external drives.

Oh well. Feels like a waste to abandon the 10.5" so soon, so I'll just keep using it. iPadOS is looking real nice and making good improvements, but I feel that MacOS is still the way to get heavier workloads done for now. Having multiple windows and workspaces open is more efficient for me.

Appears that the mouse will need to be wired - USB-C - as discussed above. I guess it has to be wired because, as currently implemented on iPad, Bluetooth can be used by only one device at a time - and if you’re using a BT keyboard, you’re screwed with the mouse. Too bad if you want to use headphones at the same time (iPad Pro 2018 doesn’t have a headphone socket).

Yes - but my point is: you can’t use a BT mouse and a BT keyboard and/or BT headphones all at the same time because you can only connect one BT device at a time.
