Mehrts:

So they include a USB-C "charging cable" for the Pro iPhones, however if you're wanting the 10Gbps USB 3 transfer speeds, you'll have to purchase another cable which supports this.

That's just stupid. Include the better cables for all the phones, otherwise people are going to be wondering why the transfer speeds are slower than expected.

From the Apple website home page:

I'm not disputing the absurdity of selling a phone bundled with a cable that doesn't max out the capabilities of the phone.

But, how many people actually transfer data over cable from their phone these days? I honestly don't remember the last time I plugged my phone into a computer to transfer data. Especially with iPhones when you have iCloud backups and syncing to iCloud Photos over wifi.

I used to replace my iPhone every two years but it's too expensive to do that now, so I'll stick with my 13 Pro for another year.

The watch is tempting, but it sounds like the series 9 won't be that much better than my current series 6.

Same here, except my iPhones are lasting at least 4 years now (with a new battery at about the half-way point).

The iPhone is a mature product, and I find very little significant difference from generation to generation, maybe with the exception of the camera. If I wait 4 years, there is generally at least some noticeable difference on replacement.

A 4 year replacement cycle also does make them very good value for money. I might even get 5 years out of my current iPhone 11.

The state of USB-C cables in the market is a mess in general, the whole thing needs an overhaul.

Me! Every time I upgrade my iPhone, I try to do a manual backup and restore (to/from Mac) as it's usually a lot faster than restoring either iPhone-to-iPhone or from iCloud.

Having this done at 10Gbps will be even better.

Wifi transfer is fine for most users that take a few pics daily and don't mind a delay before they're uploaded to iCloud. But for those that are heavy into their media editing (especially huge video files that the Pro phones can generate), the faster capability of the cabled method would save a heap of time each use.

I haven't used a cable in years either, but I'm just a casual photo snapper and wifi transfer works seamlessly in the background.

On the pricing page when you scroll down to "Which iPhone is right for you?", under the iPhone 15 Pro this seems odd...

Considering it's only got 5x optical zoom, I'd love to know how they came to that figure, seems dodgy.

From creativeblog:

"The biggest change is that Apple's taken advantage of the larger phone's size to give the iPhone 15 Pro Max a 12MP 5x optical zoom (120mm equivalent). That still doesn't match the Galaxy S23 Ultra's 10x, but it has a wider f2.8 aperture compared to f4.5 on the Galaxy. Combine it with Apple's 2x crop, and Apple claims you effectively have a 10x optical zoom. No, that's not the same thing, but I'll be interested to see the results."

Yeah that's really misleadingly worded on Apple's page by saying up to 10x optical zoom range. The "Apple's 2x crop" in the main 48 megapixel camera takes the 12 megapixels from the centre of the sensor. So you do get some extra zoom of some sort there (up to 48mm equivalent). I don't really know what to call that type of zoom but it's not "optical". (Macworld source)

But if the same applies on the telephone camera, which is only 12 megapixels to begin with, surely that means it's using the 3 megapixels from the center of the sensor to give you what they claim is 10x optical zoom.

I think a two-year innovation cycle would be quite sufficient and would also result in more significant development steps.

I'm guessing it's because it says 10x 'range'. Since there is an 0.5x zoom, a 5x zoom is 10x that.

Good point, that could be how they justify it. In which case I wouldn't be surprised to soon see Samsung start claiming theirs is up to 20x optical zoom or such. S23 Ultra would be 'up to 17x optical zoom' since the ultra wide is 13mm and the telephoto is 230mm (for anyone less obsessed with photography, those 'mm' are in the standard 35mm equivalent that Apple are using too).

My 13PM seems to do everything I need a phone to do very well.

The battery condition is at 89% so I might have that changed as I’m finding it only just about makes a day now.

A new case to smarten it up and I reckon another year before changing. Maybe not even then unless they actually do something useful.

The problem I have with iPhone from my own experience is that after about  2 years the battery usually needs replacing. Then there is the performance you have to go through and the relatively high cost involved in replacing it. That is when many just upgrade.

That's not my experience at all.

I'm in the privileged position of buying new every year and handing my old one down.  Partly because I like to hand things down in as close-to-new condition as possible, I always have my phones in a decent protective case.  While I'm not too intense about it, I aim to keep the battery charge level at between 20% and 80% as I understand the lithium battery chemicals are under the most stress when in the top or bottom 20% of their charge capacity.  My 10 month old iPhone is showing 100% battery health, and I'm a heavy-ish user with typically around 4 hours 'screen time' reported each day.  In previous years hen I have the phone down at around 13 months of age, it usually has 97-98% battery health.

Mine is about 2 years old I think. 89%.

I used to use MagSafe every day until I realised it was cooking the battery. Too late to stop it though.

A replacement from the Apple certified place in Christchurch is $159. Somewhat cheaper than a new phone!

You'll likely find it will take another 2 years to get to 80% (battery replacement required)

My XR is 5 years old next month and only just hit 80% with around 1500 charging cycles

Yes my launch xs max is at 82% and frankly does most things a smart phone should do along with most of the useful apple features.

Only a critical failure or a massive upgrade like 100% increase in battery capacity would get me to upgrade.
