No multitasking even in 2009? Only Apple can do this. Next year it will be another model called 3GS2 which will have a camera at front for video calling then next year it will be 3GS3 which might support multitasking.

billgates going to buy a super useless Apple product - yeah right!

Bluetooth file transfer, front camera, multitasking and I am locked to Itunes to do EVERYTHING on this phone. It's a locked down device.

Every Apple fanboy have been wanting these features for 2 years and what did Apple give them? A compass!

Edit - Apple was so busy developing the compass that they forgot to add a very simple option where users can disable Data Connection!

Hi - I'll....probably be swapping out my 3G for a 3GS. If not on launch day, then maybe soon after. As a photographer & family guy I want the focusing camera & video (& I'm hoping the compass will be useful for when I want to know where the sun will be coming up).
With regard to multi-tasking - everyone seems to be saying that it can't be done, but even on an un-jailbroken iPhone you can play music, start retrieving email, go to the timer & start the stopwatch, go back to read your email that was downloading, & then go & stop the stopwatch. You can start recording a voice memo & then open up the camera app, take a picture, go back to the voice memo, stop it recording & when you play it back you can hear yourself take a picture. It multi-tasks very well, but pretty much only with the Apple apps.

Cheers,
Mike

That's why I hate Apple products clicknz. Iphone is good, it has the potential to be really good but Apple being money hungry, want absolute control over all their products and therefore are preventing it from succeeding even further. The screenshot below is from my Win mobile device which I would consider as true multitasking with Wi-Fi connected at the same time.

Having owned and operated an Okta Touch for a year, I can say with some experience that the only reason I ever left apps running in the background on WinMo is that they take a while load up and you wouldn't want to open them from scratch each time you need them. On the iPhone, apps open pretty much instantaneously, so the need for multimasking is very much a non-issue.

Back to Palm OS 1995, aren't we? Remember how the Tao of Palm was that developers always always have to have everything in a state that could be easily and quickly closed so other application could run?

One of the stories about the reason why multi-tasking is not enabled on iPhones is because Apple wanted to extend battery life to the max, which wouldn't be possible if applications kept running in the background.

I have also heard that if it was Apple's decisions they would never allow any third application on their Mac OS or Mac OS Mobile...

I love how people like closed systems. If I buy a PC I want to be able to install things on it without having to "hack" my way. If this was another known company locking their systems people would be all up for a fight...

[/return to troll cave now that I have this out of my chest]

I'm interested in this comment. As a hobbyist photographer the camera in the iPhone is the thing that I'm least interested in, as I can't imagine myself using a camera phone of any type now that I'm accustomed to the image quality of an SLR.

@billgates (and other Apple Haters) why, why, why do you post and read Apple threads when you hate them anyway?? I don't post in the WinMo threads saying what a POS this is and what a POS that is. I just don't get it.
Also @billgates why would you need to have TomTom and Remote Desktop running at the same time? Why? Is it because they take so long to load that it is easier to keep them running all the time?

As Steve98 said Apps on the iPhone load qucik enough not to have that issue.

Also if you really want apps running in the background *that* much stop whining about it, jailbreak and install 'backgrounder'. You can pick and choose which apps you want to automatically run in the background or you can manually enable them when using the app.

In reply to the first thread, if your an Apple Hater and feel you must reply just put "I won't be getting the iPhone because I am an Apple Hater" You all try to make out as if your WinMo POS has no flaws, ok so the iPhone does have it's flaws....but not as many as most if not all WinMo's.

END RANT.

It's not hate (in my case). It's just me trying to understand why people are happy with a closed system - and try to break out of it.

nzbullet: jailbreak and install 'backgrounder'.

My point exactly. Too many things to do to have it working as it should from the start.

I'd love one. It's just too expensinve to justify something like that now.

Windows Mobile has a lot of problems. The majority of it though I think is in the UI - which Apple has done really well on their own system. The Windows Mobile OS itself is fine. But that damn UI...
