My 3G now doesn't have tethering after the update but my 3GS does - anyone else have the problem?

Looks like apple have disabled tethering for 4.2.1 users on the iphone 3g (the 3gs works fine)

When will apple stop screwing their users around!

Few notes to make (3GS):

has anyone tried the recurring alarms?
I lost my music library (the songs are still on the phone though - viewed through settigns app) - apparently another sync fixes this.
Not impressed by a couple of extra text tones, want to do my own custom ones (I have phoneview which apparently can do this, by overwriting the files)

I think it is nice of apple to offer an update to people who have a two generations old device (3g) even if the update is a bit crippled (ie. you at least get security updates).

Not sure the android lot get that with the massive churn in models (maybe matched only by Palm who are going to put webos 2.0 on all devices if it ever arrives). I got my wife a vodafone 845, and apparently "there are no plans to update it to 2.2"

This makes me marginally concerned about the android security model if I can't update the phone with this at least.

Hope this helps,

Jon

No improvement to battery life unfortunately - getting tired of being required to have my phone tethered to a power cable every couple of hours. What's the point of a mobile phone if it isn't mobile?

I'm a very heavy user of my iPhone but still get way more than a few hours usage before I need to charge. I think you need your battery replacing if you only get that much as it must be faulty. There's no chance a software update is going to make that much difference to take it from a few hours to something more useable.

No, because it's a commonly reported issue with the iPhone 4 - battery life is crap.

Reported where? The iphone 4 battery life is fine, I only charge every couple of days and would consider myself a heavy user.

Battery life might not be great but unless you were exaggerating on having to charge every few hours I would get a replacement as it's not that bad!

It's all over the Apple forums for a start.  Heaps of convoluted fixes all with the disclaimer "don't know if that's what did it but worked for me lol", and lots of people posting things like "if you have this problem, do this - it will work! you might need to repeat it over and over again but it will eventually work" and it in fact does not, and a few posting "fixes" that read like voodoo rituals.

My iPhone4 battery lasts a day. Same as my wifes. We recharge overnight each day.

Yes, if I don't have my iPhone4 set to autolock automatically (set to 5 mins) the battery runs out mid-afternoon. Probably because it's battery is drained because the screen is always active. Other than that neither of us has any issue with battery life.

My gripe is Facetime was deactivated after the update.. So far, have not been able to get it activated again.

My guess would be that you have a faulty battery.

I still have the tethering option in my menu settings although I haven't tried using it yet. For those without tethering: had the option disappeared for you? BTW: I bought my phone from the apple store and not from Vodafone

Upgraded my 3GS, basically it wasn't worth the download as the new ringtones only apply to the iPhone 4, Find my iPhone only works for iPhone 4 and AirPrint only works if you have a rare printer.
I could say the same about the older 4.1 as well really.
