About a month ago I put in a BUG to Apple to do with MNVO's and iPhones asking can they base the Carrier Bundle on the "Line" not the "Carrier" which meant MNVO's would actually work as they wouldn't use the Vodafone Built in Carrier settings.

Their response was that the iPhone software is working as designed and this would not be fixed/changed. :-(

I think Vodafone could ask Apple to change the settings in their Carrier bundle to enable the Editing of this field. (So People connected via MNVO's of Vodafone could actually enable tethering) .

The reason tethering does not work is the APN Set on the Carrier bundle cannot be edited via the iPhone GUI and the iPhone is trying to use vodafone's one. If this setting was editable then tethering should work. (Upto Vodafone to ask Apple as its up to Vodafone to give Apple how they like would like the iPhone to behave)

Another way to think about it is Apple actually advertise the iPhones as Carrier unlocked (in New Zealand *) but if you are not using their Official Carrier then some of the functionality of the iPhone is removed. Complaint to the ASA???

* See: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1937 it says the iPhone is not l"Locked to Carrier"

Just my 2c's

Yes as they are not am MNVO of Vodafone so the iPhone uses the default Carrier settings which allows tethering to work.

Blech, no Wifi hotspot for 3GS, with it's primitive 600MHz processor and puny 256MB of RAM. Unlike my mighty N95, with it's 400MHz processor and 96MB of RAM; now that one does a GREAT Wifi hotspot!

iPad Pro 11" + iPhone 15 Pro Max + 2degrees 4tw!

johnr: iOS 4.3 will allow:
iPhone 3GS users to create a Personal Wifi Hotspot for 1 connection

Just updated and sorry JohnR, you're wrong as the 3GS does not do Personal WiFi hotspot at all. Just USB and Bluetooth like always.

Hmm. Left iphone updating overnight when I went to bed (had already taken 2+ hours and said had 1 hour left). Unplugged when I left for work this morning and it had the apple logo on screen. Still had that when I arrived at work 10 mins later. Held down power and nothing happened. Held down power plus home button and it reset then came up with apple logo + connect to itunes symbol. No phone till I finish work!

Wi-Fi tethering on XT works really well. It supports three devices connected via Wi-Fi; trying to add a fourth results in a connection timeout.
