tdgeek: Looks like it, yes. I am losing interest, and iOS5 is a very nice move, the hardware isn't for me at least.
64Gb for a phone looks a little over the top too.

You can never have too much storage on a phone!

Agreed. Especially if the phone also doubles as your mp3 player. I'm already starting to brush against the upper limit on my 32GB iPhone.

Another advantage of an iPhone 4S style refresh is that my iPhone 4 won't seem quite as out of date :-)

If it is only a 4S, and the screen is (roughly) the same size, they will be losing at least a few people I know to the likes of the SGS2.

Speaking of the SGS2, my brother has one and both the 16GB intenal and 32GB Micro Sd card are full already. He's had it for less than a month!

Fair comments. I'm still not sure it will be much of a style refresh if any, I hope so. All I really want is a bigger screen. But, if I am going to have to "re-buy" at $1300 I want all the other stuff too!

I am really thinking that iOS5 is going to be the big gain, and that is quite well priced.....

Yeah, a few guys I know won't buy a new one unless the screen is 4 inches plus, the SGS2 is just such a nice phone and the extra screen size makes such a difference.  But we will know tomorrow :)

There's a big story around Sprint paying $20 billion for 30 million iPhones over the next 4 years. Part of that deal is said to be exclusive rights to the iPhone 5 before AT&T and Verizon. The other half of that rumour said the iPhone 5 was to be launching 1st quarter next year.

http://www.tipb.com/2011/10/03/sprint-dropping-20-billion-iphone-deal-4g-iphone-5-exclusive/

I can't see Apple sabotaging 4S sales by announcing an iPhone 5 is coming early next year, unless the 4S is indeed a much cheaper option. Here's hoping anyway.

This really is an odd one. Only thing I can think to make that sound likely its that maybe the 4GS and 5 would share the same internals, but have a different exterior?  That way the 4GS isn't 'worse' so much, but still gives Sprint a reason to have an exclusive.  Very strange indeed.

Will we see Telecom New Zealand selling iPhones? Gen-i to supply Apple laptops, desktops and tablets to government.

While I would love a 'cheap' iPhone I really have a hard time seeing Apple diluting the brand.

The proposition for has been the same for years:

You want an iPhone you pay X. You want last years phone you pay Y. That's it.

No mid-range, no budget option. People expect to pay top dollar and get a top phone. Yeah, with the possibility there will be a newer better model out in 12 or so months.

This works.

There have been LTE rumors around for a while and the US is the biggest market so it isn't a stupid idea as an upgrade.

They start producing a 'budget' iPhone Apple are on a slippery slope to fighting it out with Android on Android's home turf; good mid-range phones, not as flash as an iPhone but half the price or less.

If I was Apple I wouldn't pick that fight.

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

Clearly I'm not Apple but I would definitely pick that fight if I had my say. To me, the appeal is in Apple's ecosystem, not the hardware itself. This negates the Apple vs Android argument for me.

The problem (if you can call it that) is the price for admission to that ecosystem is pretty expensive by mobile phone standards. If Apple could produce an iPhone with updated internals but using last years form factor a) they'd save developement costs on phone design b) the supply chain is already up, running and well established and c) you'd allow more people into that ecosystem to spend money.

Why doesn't Apple just make a fone with say 16Gig internal memory and a SD card slot. This price gouging on the larger storage cost which is way more than mini SD card costs ..

No doubt the fans will buy it even with 128Gig it cost $2000..

I feel that it is a fight worth fighting, merely to bring more of the populace into its customer base. Not really needed till Android and latterly Windows Phone came along. On the other hand, financially its still a big win for them as they make more margin even though the market share will continue to slide and eventually settle. The profits from iTunes and the AppStore I feel is worth getting into a lower priced phone, albeit still not a budget phone.

JimmyC

I agree.

I totally respect your point of view, and your's JimmyC, but I disagree.

iPhones are aspirational products, I think it is all about the margin on the phone. Ferrari could make cheaper cars but why do that when people already buy the expensive ones and you are going to get more margin on the expensive one?

I understand your point on the eco-system. Apple has taken heat for the slice they demand from developers selling Apps, particularly newspaper and magazine Apps. Obviously, this revenue stream is important.

Apple has been slowly loosing market share since the start of Android. The media always paint this as iPhone Vs Android and say Apple is loosing. How many different Android phones are there? There is only ever one current iPhone. Apple hasn't changed it's strategy because the margins are so good.

Toyota sells more cars than Ferrari, I don't think this keeps Enzo's grandchildren awake at night.

I may well be wrong but I wouldn't do anything to detract from the image of the iPhone as the 'top of the line'.

I guess it comes down to whether you see more revenue in the eco-system (services) or hardware (the phone you hold in you hand). This is always a 'to what extent...' question so I respect your views.

I think the hardware is going to be where the money is at, like the iPod. Apple never cared about the music, just wanted to sell you the (high margin) player.

This may well change over time.

Anyway, we'll see. Like I said, a cheap iPhone works for me. I'd love cheap Ferrari too.

All very very good points which I agree with generally. I like the analogies. We will see at at 6am tomorrrow morning. The reason I feel a mid range phone is do-able is that with the fact they make one device (more or less) and that over the ipod touch, iphone 4, and even the 3GS there is a lot of efficiency and duplication there. For that I assume that they will make a good margin on a lower phone with lower specs, and get that growing revenue from ongoing use, i.e. apps/iTunes. Getting a new Apple 'convert" is building the future, or in fact lessening the market slide effect.

But its all fun to speculate, get back on here in 3 years to see what actually happened and how it worked out!!
