khull: My mate in Australia bought the iPhone 5 without contract from a reseller. I've talked to people at work who flew back from OZ business trip with iPhone 5's

Again, it supports the fact that Apple does not care whether they actually sell it on a contract or otherwise.

As per my earlier posts got mine Monday via corporate...
I hear rumbles the 2nd shipment has arrived and some retailers will be selling outright possibly as soon as this weekend.

I wonder if the recent samsung s3 price drop for $799 has anything to do with the iphone 5 lack of supply in NZ for buying outright. I was considering an iphone 5 off contract but due to lack of avaliablility and th samsung price drop, I am now looking at the samsung s3 as it looks a much better deal. Instead I may get a new 5G ipod touch when it comes out for around home and as a music player, and a samsung s3 for a smartphone, although if the s3 is also a good music player, I may forget about the ipod touch.

Matt, are you referring to music as in an app, or the quality? The S3 runs the Wolfson DAC for audio (look it up) as far as player apps go you can choose one you like. You wont need an iPod touch.

Where did you hear such rumbles? Which retailers would be first in line?

littleheaven: I ordered within the 1st 15 minutes, white 64GB, still sitting at 3-4 weeks. I think it all depends on popularity of the model.

I don;t think so. What I feel is that the Telco's got stock, not Apple NZ. Remember there was a very high demand. When the first stock shipment arrives, I expect all of you to end up with the same "2-3 days" at the same time. Also, I can guarantee that there is a buffer, so as to avoid the expectation (3-4 weeks) not being met.  It will be a case for example "Ok, the shipment arrives 2.5 weeks, we better say 3-4 weeks, and narrow that down later, so we don't get caught with an unforeseen delay.

mattbush: Last year Telecom had stocks of prepay iphone 4s's about 2 weeks before the Apple shipments. Plenty of time to cancel the Apple orders.

Dont get your hopes up... just spoke to Telecom, they say 1-2 months yet!

Utter rubbish!

Telecom still have stocks now...was offered one yesterday on contract(and it was a 32GB black). They are just trying to sign as many up as possible to a contract. They dont want us all getting our prepay phones from Apple....you will see.

To say that this is different from previous years is a myth...Apple have huge stocks..they know exactly how many to manufacture before a launch.

Actually there is no Apple NZ....they run it from Aussie..thats why Aussie is always first..and if you have ordered an Iphone from Apple it ships direct from a warehouse in China.

Logistics 101

2.5 weeks = 3-4 weeks

it is a formula I use constantly, you can always revise down if the customer gets sh!tty about the long wait.

I agree the 3-4 week lead time is likely to be an over-estimate. That would be the absolute latest they'd expect the items to ship, plus a little buffer. Cut it too fine and miss delivery deadline by a day and they'd be swamped with customers complaining their phones had not shown up, and that's not what they want their service staff doing all day.

Under-promise, over-deliver.

Ah ok. I knew there are no Apple stores now, I assumed that they would have a warehouse/HO presence here though.

I have no doubt you're right about this, which is why I wondered about model popularity and shipping times. If all the Apple pre-orders are coming direct from China, as we suspect, how come some are shipping faster than others when the orders were made later? I'm guessing it's due to how many of each model they made and whether they had enough to cover the demand. If they had adequate stock of every model I would have expected everyone's shipping estimates to have gone down at the same time.

I asked in a Telecom store today about buying outright. Was told it'd be at least a couple of weeks, but that they (at least the person I spoke to) haven't been told when.
