jonherries: Hmmm pricing is interesting. Nexus 7 for $399 (Dick Smith) and ipad mini for $479.
I guess the choice will depend on the ecosystem in terms of sunk cost and availability...?
Makes it a much harder decision than I thought it would be.

Yatey: I feel so let down with the announcement of the newER iPad this morning. Around six months ago I bought my iPad 3, and the 4th generation one is already here? Even though the new model isn't a dramatic upgrade in terms of functionality from the 3 (not enough for me to upgrade), I am still disappointed. I never thought being an early adopter of an Apple product would end up like this.

I can't see why. Nothing has changed to your iPad apart from a choice if you want it with the newer one. If you we're looking forward to a newer iPad in 6 months, you can still do that, or sooner, or wait a tad for the next one. Choices.

They are basing their reaction on being an apple consumer, and the fact that historically apple take at least a year to update product versions. Apple buyers like this because it does help protect the value of the product when it comes to upgrade it. This is partly the reason I think older iphone models quite valuable compared to other brands. This update to the ipad after just a few months is quite a new thing for apple, and I think they have done it to protect their full ipad sales, as the full sized ipad is a lot better in terms of specs than the ipad mini, so should last a lot longer in terms of IOS updates. So I too would also feel a bit disappointed by apple for doing that, as I think it does devalue the second hand value of ipad 3 . eg If you normally upgrade annually, and you planned on selling it to upgrade prior to the next expected release date next year, then you are not going to get anywhere near as much for your second hand ipad 3. But don't apple have a refund policy that if you buy within 30 days and they upgrade a product, that they will switch it for the newer product?. Or perhaps that is only in the US.
mattwnz:gehenna: I can't see a big consumer uptake but I'm usually wrong about these things. I can see this has being huge for education though, especially for the younger ones who struggle with the size of the iPad.
I see a big possible uptake, but mainly for the cheapest model as it will be an excellent gaming device for kids.

I agree 100%. $479 for a 16GB iPad makes it a viable kids gift, even an extra device for some. A great option instead of iPod Touch

tdgeek:Now it's iPad 3 or 4 now, 5 in 6 months. So if you were intending on the iPad 4 in 6 months you still can. Or 5. Resale isn't too much an issue, they hold value well, especially if you have a non current version, I.e. one that cannot be bought, those with higher GB

I agree with this, I think the iPad mini may well hurt sales of the iPod touch. I can see schools using them a lot also.

I don't think we will see a ipad 5 in 6 months. Infact I think they may entend it out to 18 months for the next upgrade, because what can they really do to it to upgrade it hardware wise... I predict the ipad 5 will have a smaller bezel and will be thinner, with an 8MP camera, with the A7 chip.
tdgeek: My predictions.
iPod Touch will reduce GB and price, as mini IPad will suit many. Touch will thus sell better, Touch is too pricey before, let alone now.
iPhones will also move to two versions, 4" and 4.6 ish. Many don't want a big phone, but many do.
I feel Apple is out to cover more demographics, that's nowcovered on two iPad options, I can see phones going the same.
zaptor: Anyone read what the heat dissipation is like? (perhaps too early to know)
The main stumbling block for me purchasing the new iPad was the heat under (GPU?) load. I know, for a lot of people it wasn't an issue, which is fair enough. For me it was.
As someone else here noted, Apple don't usually have such a short release cycle. It appears when they do uncharacteristic things there's usually a very good reason (which the rumor mill reveals eventually) - I guess we'll find out in time.
Apple aren't afraid to cannibalise existing products. It's just part of their innovative culture I guess.
Then again, they're not afraid to simply drop "legacy" products/features like a lead balloon.
