Used it today at BP and Z - Both worked instantly, didn't even have to hold it that close to the machine to work. One odd thing was when I used it at Z, it was accepted but signature required. Something I haven't come across before when using the same card on Paywave.
Any comments made are my personal views and does not represent those of my employer
Must be something that needs configuring on the terminal or bank end?

Did you spend over $80?
PhantomNVD: Apple Pay on my OneSmart would be the ultimate way AirNZ could influence me to use their card for more than travel/international purchasing.
OneSmart is a BNZ product. It would need BNZ to support Apple Pay for that to work.
Considering OneSmart is on the way out I don't think you'll see much else happening with it as a product.

Is OneSmart on the way out? I just got an email the other day about my new card coming...
My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.
Used it today at Britomart to top up my hop card, and when I went to nandos for lunch. Funnily enough the lady at nandos accidentally entered the wrong amount into the machine so I had to do it twice. Tried my apple watch the second time around. They both work really well! Very exciting :)
Interestingly when I topped up my card the notification didn't appear on my lock screen telling me that a transaction had occurred.

The product is under review. Only existing OneSmart users are getting Airpoints cards with OneSmart now rather than every Airpoints customer.

I hope they don't kill it off. It's the easiest way I've found to throw my money at Hulu & HBO.
Qantas seems to offer something similar. I know they sent me a card which I haven't activated.

benokobi: Anyone opened a account at anz for this? Was it quick?
Yup, opened one specifically for this.
Make sure you make an appointment before you go into a branch, I wasn't able to open an account on the spot at 3 different stores because they were all tooooo busy apparently. Opened many bank accounts in my short life and never encountered that. Relatively painless, but make sure you have proof of address which I found quite hard considering my rent includes utilities (so I don't get directly billed by anyone), and I have paper statements turned off for everything. Thankfully they accepted a printout of my statement from ASB haha.
One thing I found annoying was the "About You" questions I had to sit through, now I look back and probably could have said I don't want to answer those questions but the lady was too nice to say no to. Just a lot of questions (15min+) about my job, income, future, savings blah blah. I'd told her many times "I just want this to use Apple Pay, I won't be moving any accounts to this bank" but she was still keen to ask so whatever.
Apparently some branches can give you a Visa Debit card on the spot? I don't know if that's true or not because I was told it wasn't but some people online swear they got one. I had to wait about 4 working days for it to come by post so it wasn't bad.
All up it was about 45 minutes in branch, and 4 days to receive the debit card after that. Setup of the debit card (adding PIN) and Apple Pay took no more than a minute on my phone.

Yeah, it's certainly a thing, ANZ have generic Visa Debits with the embossed name something like "MR/MRS CARDHOLDER" (Better than ANZ Australia who had actual gender specific generic cards and ran out of the MR's, leaving me with "MRS NIGHT AND DAY" until they re-gened it) and a reasonable expiry. I was issued one when I switched in Feb, I was eligible for a free MyPhoto card, so he basically said "Take this, it's got a cardnumber on it, use that to get your MyPhoto card, it'll save you having to wait until we send a personalised one, and then replace that again".
They did the same with my EFTPOS card too the whole "here's a generic card, go online, get a free MyPhoto one generated, and it'll mean we don't need to post it"

If you activated and use the OneSmart, you will get a replacement. If not, you get a standard AirPoints card.
The QANTAS offering is exactly the same type of thing. I activated and loaded mine just to get into the draw they had at launch, never used after that.
As the novelty of paying with your phone, sorry for the comment folks, but Android users have been doing this in New Zealand for over a year now. The uptake was so small that the main service closed shop last month (not surprising, since three telcos and two were involved and I guess expectations were out of this world) but some other banks put their own NFC-based cards on Android on the side before that.
