dafman: I'm lucky to not have to pay for a phone, but if I did, I would probably max out at around $700 - for a couple of reasons: 1. Drop/break risk is high with a phone, 2. Life cycle doesn't extend beyond 2-years (for me).

So, a $2,000 phone, out of the question.

Assuming a 2 year life (before I hand a phone on to someone else), that's $20 per week just to own a nice phone.  Even a 3 year life is $13 per week.  That's enough to make you think twice about it.

If my phones were paid for out of a family savings account, I would own a sub-$500 phone.

That screen on the X is a little retarded, the black bar cuts off your picture in games and videos? The hell they thinking.

Also that price is out of this world stupid.

Doesnt the galaxy 8 have an OLED screen as default? If so I dont understand why Apple hasnt rolled them out on all new models.

Supply and cost are likely the biggest issues. Pretty sure they are using samsung panels, but are investing $$$ in LG to diversity supply.

Samsung has had OLED screens since forever (not just the SGS8). I would say Apple is doing it to promote a 'premium' product. After all the tenth anniversary is kinda special.

For the second time in 10 yrs, I want an iphone. iphone x.

Will I buy it for $2000 - hell no. :(

Another $1000 will get you a very powerful MacBook Pro...so it does seem slightly expensive.

Yes, but...what is the point? What do you do on a phone than requires that level of processing?

Since the 8/8 Plus is just another incremental update, I wonder why Apple broke their own naming scheme. Would've thought it would've been the 7S and 7S Plus.

I would guess if the augmented reality gains traction in a practical commercial way, that processing power could be useful for delivering a higher quality result.

Imagine slotting an iPhone with this much power into a Google Cardboard holder.  You look around your kitchen while the iPhone takes a note of the corners of the room to get dimensions, and then the designer of your potential new kitchen superimposes a new kitchen layout in a way that lets you see the existing structure (ceiling, doorways, etc) but instead of seeing your existing cabinets you see photo-realistic new cabinetry......  you could walk around the room and look at it close up (and be very tempted to reach out and touch it!).

Or perhaps stand in front of a mirror and see yourself in new clothes....  perhaps a new dress that swings realistically as you turn around.

But an 8 is far better than a 7S  :-)

It's funny how this thread has turned into complaints and criticisms from people who don't even have or want an iPhone..

I'm happy with my iPhone 11, (AKA Galaxy S8). As for face unlocking, I don't have a great success rate, same with fingerprint unlocking. You often have to stare weirdly at the phone holding it unnaturally in front of your face, and then it still doesn't always work. Finger print reader on back of phone is a lost cause too. But I'm sure Apple will invent a new supper pattern swipe unlock for their next phone.

Other than the over hyped marketing that comes with Apple; yes they are good phones and the time will come in due course to replace my wife's iPhone 6 with either an 8 or X, but that will be next year.

I was more surprised that they announced the X as being pronounced "ten", rather than the letter "x". Either next year or the following (depending on whether there is a 8S), they've kinda screwed themselves as they can't call it the iPhone 9 because then it instantly sounds older than the X in conversation.

I wonder if the 8/X are the last iPhone models to use numbers in the name...
