Every device you wish to use with Apple Pay has to have the card loaded onto it, there’s no setup syncing between devices. In System Preferences on the Mac there’s a ‘Wallet & Apple Pay’ setting where you can add the card. When I was setting it up the only option it offered to activate my cards was to call the BNZ. I haven’t had a chance to see if it’s working yet.

I don't have the Wallet & Apple Pay option in my system preferences but my understanding of Apple's support page is that this is only available on Macs with integrated Touch ID. It appears that Macs without this feature can initiate an online Apple Pay transaction, with the transaction completed on an iPhone.

You're right, I wasn't aware of that.

Unfortunately despite all hopes, my card didn't arrive today, so likely will have to wait till Monday now :( Was all excited to give it a try, too!

It arrived! and I have activated and made my first payment using ApplyPay... I was quite surprised at the distance I was able to approve the payment from- it was a good 15cm or so away from the reader I reckon (iPhone 7). Super easy to make a payment.

What I was intrigued to see was that the thing I paid for at Mobil shows as an Eftpos transaction in my account. Is this just a slight error on BNZ's way of representing Visa transactions, which I thought showed differently?

Either way, happy with it and look forward to using it where ever I go!

BNZ offering double rewards on Apple Pay transactions from 24 Oct 2017 to 10 Jan 2018.

Details follows:

To be eligible for double Cash Rewards or double Fly Buys points (whichever you have chosen) (“Double Rewards”), you must set up Apple Pay for your BNZ Advantage Visa Platinum (“Platinum), BNZ Advantage Visa Classic (“Classic”) or BNZ Advantage Business (“Business”) credit card (the “Cards”) and use your Card to make eligible Apple Pay purchases between 24 October 2017 and 10 January 2018 (the “Offer Period”). After the Offer Period, you will earn rewards at the standard Cash Rewards or Fly Buys earn rates that apply to your Card.
For the avoidance of doubt, Double Rewards means two times the standard Cash Rewards or Fly Buys points for all eligible Apple Pay purchases.
Eligible Apple Pay purchases means all purchases made on your Card excluding cash advances (including some bill payments which are cash advances), balance transfers, fees, interest, credit card insurance payments, gambling, betting and lottery transactions, government charges and other unauthorised transactions for which you are not liable.
Your Card account must remain open and you must comply with your Card’s terms and conditions throughout the Offer Period.
If you switch between a Platinum and Classic Card during the Offer Period, you will continue to be eligible for Double Rewards (provided you continue to meet the other eligibility criteria). You will earn Double Rewards at the rate offered by your new Card from the date of the switch.
If you switch between Cash Rewards and Fly Buys during the Offer Period, the new rewards programme will take effect from the start of your next statement period.
You will receive your Double Rewards at the end of the Offer Period, in your monthly statement opening after the 19th of January 2018. You will receive Double Rewards for the Offer Period in the reward type that you are earning at the time we calculate them after the Offer Period ends.
Cash Rewards or Fly Buys terms and conditions (whichever you have chosen), will also apply to Double Rewards.

BNZ obviously trying to encourage uptake of Apple Pay! Did they do anything like this when they launched Android Pay?

Yeah - I don't remember them doing anything like that, though I wasn't paying much attention to Android Pay.

I wouldn't think they'd need to encourage uptake - I'd hazard a guess that there's already been far more put through on Apple Pay since it's release than has yet via Android Pay.

Thanks for posting that, I had no idea but that is a very good incentive to use it! BTW do you know if you can use it for transactions *greater* than $80 with a PIN? Like with pay wave?

Absolutely yes. It prompts for the PIN above $80 - just like with payWave.

Absolutely yes. It prompts for the PIN above $80 - just like with payWave.

Not always, in my experience.

I bought an Apple TV last week from Noel Leeming ($299) and used Apple Pay (iPhone 7, ANZ Visa Credit), and didn't need to type a PIN to confirm. I did see "authenticated by device" somewhere, thought it was on my receipt but just checked and it's not. Might've been on the EFTPOS terminal screen. Perhaps only new-ish EFTPOS/POS terminals can do this?

I think it's an Apple Pay thing – since you can't pay without a verified Touch ID (or Face ID as of Friday) instance, it's as safe as/safer than a PIN number. It's almost as if you've pre-PIN'd by doing Touch/Face ID.

I've used Apple pay for amounts >$80 and always been asked for PIN.

My first Apple Pay transaction was to pay for my groceries, $235. No PIN prompt. This was on a BNZ Visa Debit card.

Seems like it's inconsistent across users then. I've been prompted for PIN entry on amounts over $80 with my BNZ Visa Debit connected to Apple Pay as well.

It depends on the terminal and its specifications.

If you have authenticated yourself using the Touch ID on your iPhone, on some terminals you will never have to enter a PIN regardless of transaction value, but some terminals will still require it.
