I smell gimmick. It will be interesting to see how effective it really is when proper calibrators can put it to the test.

Just saw a website (flatpanelshd.com) that points out:

”It is important to emphasize that Apple TV's 'Color Balance' feature is not a full calibration. While it can compensate for factors like too high color temperature (i.e. picture looks too blue), most TVs will still apply static or dynamic color, contrast, motion and other forms of enhancement, especially with the TV set to its default 'Standard' or 'Vivid' picture mode.”

i.e. Apple are describing this as ‘colour correction’ - not claiming a full calibration.

Fair enough.  But considering no-one ever calibrates anything (relatively speaking, where no-one = not us), colour balancing is way better than not doing it, right?

Yes - I wasn’t saying otherwise. Wasn’t saying it was a waste of time - just pointing out, to those are starting to criticise it because it’s not a full calibration system, that Apple aren’t claiming it to be a full calibration system.

I hope the Airpoints store start to stock them as I have a heap of air-dollars I will not be using for travel.

I’m still betting it’s more likely gimmick than genuine added value. Apple TV’s equivalent of the iPhone 12’s marvellous “small ceramic nano-crystals embedded in the glass.” But happy to see what the testers say after it releases.

When the colour correction is completed, you can see the before and after pictures on a split screen to compare them and see the effect.

Now here is something I did know about this new 6th Gen Apple TV:

https://www.macrumors.com/roundup/apple-tv/

Along with WiFi 6, the second-generation Apple TV 4K is the first Apple TV that has built-in Thread support. Thread is a low-power networking technology that offers a secure, mesh-based system able to interface with other Thread-enabled smart home devices for improved connectivity, so many HomeKit devices will benefit from the new Apple TV model.

PS: The Apple TV 4K will be available for purchase on Friday, April 30, with orders set to ship out in the second half of May.

What did you expect for $0? Professional-grade monitor calibration tool?

The HomePod Mini also has Thread support. If you are into HomeKit, you should keep an eye out for devices built on Thread, for future-proofing.

[long sigh] I didn’t expect anything, I just expressed an opinion after seeing Apple’s marketing spin, that’s all. I’m simply betting this feature more likely gimmick, less likely genuine value add. I could be wrong.

Just updated my iPhone and ATV 4K to 14.5 and tried the ATV colour balancing on our LG C8. It's very quick - less than a minute.

The result was a minor change to the picture colour. Maybe it's better than before - dunno. Maybe our TV was already fairly well balanced - maybe people whose tellies are wildly out of balance will see something worth having. It'll be a YMMV thing. No harm done.

Upgraded all of my Apple products to 14.5 today.

Nice to see that my Apple TV 4K now has a working Siri voice assistant.

I was going to upgrade to the new model, but 14.5 gives me several of the upgrades on my present model.

I would like the new remote, but at $89 I'll keep using my iPhone app.

8 days ago I sent the Airpoints Store an email asking if they will be stocking the new products, TV, AirTags & Homepod mini, I never got a reply. This morning I phoned their customer desk and the big answer is YES and in fact the techs were adding them into the online store this day and they should all be there end of day and yes apparently you will be able to pre-order. yippee 😆

Question: TV 32Gb @ $299 OR 64Gb @ $329 ($30 difference)

I am not a gamer or Apple Arcade subscriber. My downloaded movie and music collection is stored on my iMac (1Tb) so I intend to connect the two via the home network. So the only App's on board will be the default ones plus all the 3rd party ones for my streaming and news reading habits. I always have in the back of my mind about how these app's keep growing in size as they introduce more features though.

Thoughts ??

I've been using the 32GB ATV4K for a couple of years now. I've never once encountered anything that would require an additional 32GB of storage.
