Expected most of the comments to be about the price, was not disappointed :)

Personally, if it solves the annoyance of moving between my Apple devices (work MBP, personal MBP, iPad and iPhone), the XM4s I'm currently using are going in the bin.

That's a very expensive fix for an annoyance Apple made for you.

How did Apple make that an annoyance?

Amen to that! Thankfully I've just been refunded by the retailer I purchased my XM4s from (after they stopped working if worn for more than an hour, and Sony NZ didn't care), so that money will be going towards the AirPods Max which will make my life a whole lot easier. No more fiddling with bluetooth settings and that buggy "Headphones" app that was clearly made a long time ago.

My airpods pro work great with my android phone and Sony TV. They don't work well with my windows pcs but the Bluetooth on that is trash. I have similar problems with my XM3s.

Of course you get some extra features using them with apple stuff but they work really well regardless.

Meanwhile, I use Samsung Galaxy Buds+ with my MacBook no issue.

I've never figured out why you'd need an app for headphones in the first place. My Sony's seem none the worse for the lack of one.

Yep, they work just fine without the app. However the app is the way Sony delivers software upgrades to the headset and how you can change the functions of the touch controls plus one or two other features.

The "Headphones" app works on my devices (WH-1000XM3 and WF-1000XM3) without any problems, Never had any problems with the Android version. It seems the only people having issues are using Apple products. No Bluetooth problems either. I'm starting to see a pattern.

You are seeing what you want to see. Perhaps you should read the thread more carefully.

I have used Bose and Sennheiser headphones with my iPhone, including their respective apps, with no problems.

If there were some conspiracy with Apple crippling third party headphones then why would they only target Sony?

I don't think they deliberately cripple anyone's products. However from past experience Apple has implemented protocols that create restrictions in some circumstances. Like not being able to share files between devices using Bluetooth. I don't know if they still do that sort of thing.

I have noticed no matter which product (Apple , Android, Windows etc) some people have they always seem to have problems.

Also in my experience as general rule Apple owners tend not to be the sort of person who will "experiment" with how their devices work. They like how it works out of the box and that is the perfect answer for them. When something doesn't work they tend to not know or be interested in figuring out why it doesn't work.

Since Apple devices are all designed by the same company and therefore designed to work with each other there tends to be less inter connectivity problems. For example there are many Bluetooth protocols, different Bluetooth stacks plus more recently low energy, getting devices from various manufacturers can be a mine field. When all the devices come from one manufacturer you would expect them to connect easily.

For me the biggest requirements were disabling the awful touch controls on the XM4s (which I'm now rid of thankfully) so that they didn't freak out every time I moved them, and also disabling the "Speak to chat" which seemed to re-enable itself every few days. Both of these settings required the "Headphones" app.

The Bose app on the other hand is great (and named appropriately) and updated frequently. It's stable, fast, and visually pleasing. It also doesn't ever forget my settings.

I think you just described me perfectly!

When I buy something that I consider to be a 'computer' - i.e. a laptop or phone - I buy Apple because I know they fit within the limits of my computer skills.

On the other hand if I'm buying something like a watch or a pair of headphones then I am inclined to prefer the robust and utilitarian products from established players, rather than the more complicated and fiddly alternatives offered by Apple.

This approach has generally worked well for me, but I'm probably not your typical Geekzone user.

First reviews are appearing.

It sounds like sound quality and noise cancelling are excellent and they are very well made and comfortable. It also sounds like they are very heavy and the crown dial isn't necessarily intuitive. I doubt it'll move the dial for anyone who was/wasn't buying them.

Sony does in fact have an app for its headphones - ‘Headphones Connect’. When I tried using it a couple of years ago it was pretty much useless.

Have there been any reviews published by hifi experts yet?

At this price point the product really needs to be assessed in the context of high end audio products, and not just reviewed by a computer nerd who doesn't know what proper hifi sounds like.

To say the Sony app is "useless" is taking things a bit far IMHO.

It does everything a headphone app should allow - adjust the sound settings, allow button mapping (on supported headphones), and is the main way to update firmware. Just about every headphone manufacturer has an app because it's the only way to configure these types of settings on headphones.
