So it won't connect to a cellular network? Will it connect to wifi?

Yes, wifi is fine.

I've tried with/without sim card, that's sim is in an old phone now.

Guessing it looks like it needs to verify something with firmware and is failing.

Unfortunately I tried a restore and at this point I can't setup the phone, it says I need to update the software.

Basically if I try to setup using a laptop, it just sits, if I use wifi I get "unable to activate". I didn't turn off find my phone, which probably isn't helping.

My fear is it was some weird security feature work put on there so I could get email etc.

If I remember correctly my mother in law had the same issue, or something very similar (Actually a problem with iMessage and TXT I think).
We ended up factory resetting the phone WITHOUT restoring the backup. After the factory reset everything was fine. If we restored the backup the issue would persist.

I have noticed far more bugs in 15 than any iteration before. Apps that open as black pages. Widgets that do not populate. Animations that freeze half way. That kind of stuff.

I haven't updated to 15.2 but my phone has had some strange behaviours for a while and I'm wondering if I should reset it without restoring a backup. It would result in some data loss, but most of it (e.g. calendar & emails) would come back when I log into my iCloud account.

Is it worth doing or a waste of time?

In the end it's been diagnosed as hardware failure.

I guess bad timing.

DjShadow:

The update gave Carplay in my Mazda a bit of trouble this evening and the headunit software crashed, anyone else having similar probs?

I have just updated to 15.2 and I had no problems connecting to CarPlay in my CX-5 this morning.

Having said that, I find the Mazda entertainment system pretty flakey in general so it wouldn't surprise me if there are some isolated problems with this update.

With this update 15.2 Apple CarPlay has had a change. On plug in it used to go straight back to the last current playing tune of that PlayList,

• now it goes back to the vehicles infotainment screen
• select Apple CarPlay
• it now brings up the screen of the last list of whether you were playing from Library or PlayLists or Radio
• touch the 'Now Playing' symbol to bring up the now playing from those lists

This is all a step backwards here ☹️

Also I have had my CarPlay freeze twice since update and the fix is either totally turn off infotainment system or unplug from iPhone

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.
