My understanding is that only Vodafone has tethering. Didn't 4.0 remove it for other telcos?

OK seems that it must be only with non official carriers (eg everyone except vodafone) that the problem happens.

I get frustrated with apple ......

I'm starting to get frustrated on the lack of support for anything new for 3G iPhones in these updates.

I completed the update the wrong way around by updating to 4.2 then having a read of the features it includes and the fine print basically excludes everything from the 3G model!

They could at least have included AirPrint on the 3G.

Not that I don't feel sympathetic or anything, mind, but Apple aren't a charity. Giving software updates to phones they haven't sold for a long while now doesn't make them any money, but it does cost them a lot.

If it was any other brand of smartphone you'd be lucky to be getting bug fixes after launch + 6 months.

Yup, nothing else I own gets updated after the product is no longer sold so I think Apple is being pretty fair, even though I do understand the pain as I'm sure it could cope with some if these extra features.

I actually feel it's worse that the 3GS is not getting some of the extra features that aren't hardware specific as it's still a current product (even though it's not the latest release it's still sold as new). It's a bit bad when people are locked into 2 year contracts with the promise of software updates but then make it obvious that features are held back.

Yeh ive figured that out today, my mate works for vodafone, he has iphone 4 too, and yep the texts are going, just not coming back and activating. its frustrating, will just have to wait until apple servers rejoice again, such a lame way of activating a feature.

Really? I have lots of software that gets updated after it was sold to me. Operating systems often have security fixes and sometimes new features are added. What about the "free" applications that the OS manufacturer provides?
