Just from a quick look around I had this afternoon:

Bond and Bond on Queen St is opening at 8am with 'free coffee'.

At Botany Town Centre, Dick Smith is opening at 8am, where as JB Hifi and Bond and Bond are both opening at 9am.
When I told a sales rep at JB of this, he didnt seem too fussed.

Why would they be? Even if they open an hour later, they will still sell out anyway...

So people can experience the joy of sleeping on the street overnight, buy an iPad, and still make it to work by 9am. I'm just guessing here. Maybe I'm wrong.

It's all part of the experience. haha.

What puzzles me is the people who end up queuing are not usually fans but people who are on their first iDevice

I'd say they want one and know the demand will be high so they don't want to miss out. I'm off tomorrow but busy, I'll check in weekend and if sold out, wait till another shipment.

Just had a first look at a real live iPad 3rd gen (Workmate got it from Aus). While the screen is nice its not that big of a jump on an ipad 2 to look at in that you don't go "I must have this!" Dont get me wrong, it is nice and its def sharper but not $$$ worth of upgrade cost sharper if you know what I mean.

You can def feel the extra weight over an ipad 2 as well which is a big minus for me after having an ipad 1.

If you have a ipad 1 its worth the upgrade but if you have a 2 I personally wouldn't bother. If they can get the weight back down for the 4th gen I will prob upgrade then.

Just wondering if your time included any retina optimised apps? There actually aren't that many out as yet. Standard apps will still look the same as iPad2, but I know folks in the US are geeking out about the quality of HD wallpapers they can now apply. It'll come down entirely to source material I'd say.

How do you find it? have you owned one before?

I am debating upgrading my iPad 1 but only use it for web browsing email etc. so struggling to justify the upgrade.

I agree with the extra weight, can definitely feel it but I think its something I won't notice in a day or two. I think the screen is excellent though, the crispness of the text is great, especially after having a 4S and seeing the difference the extra pixels make.

Your right, and I was concerned about the amount of retina experience that will be there to start with. Some apps are upgraded, and reading eBooks, web browsing will be at the new res so thats a plus.

Flipboard but agree that HD wallpapers would look nice. Text is def sharper for reading but like I said personally not enough to pay a few hundred to upgrade.

I'm liking it, I own an iPad 2 as well. I think definitely worth an upgrade if you are running an iPad 1. The screen makes web browsing and email so crisp and easy on the eyes.  If you had an iPad 2 then it would probably be a slightly more difficult decision, I spend my day developing apps so I had to get one, but I probably would have anyway.
