I spent all night getting 3.0 FINALLY to go on my 1st gen 2G iPhone, and set the APN to:

www.iphone-vodafone.net.x

As it is incorrect (and I am on prepay so don't have an "iPhone data plan" anyway), I expected to be blocked from internet access as reported here.

Wrong.

I was able to open a website once out of WiFi range, and paid for the privilege.

What's going on here?

I'm in Dunedin 2G if that makes any difference.

Ok it cost me some cents but hopefully this information saves you a few in return.

The default APN for Vodafone NZ in the 3.0 software is:

www.iphone-vodafone.net.nz

Contrary to what is logical, if you change this to ANYTHING (ie. make a fake/dummy APN), then you WILL connect and be charged casual data if you are on Prepay and not on an iPhone plan. I am unsure what happens if you are on 100Mb/month because I don't have this add-on.

Paradoxically, when I LEFT the APN as is, then I was unable to connect and there was a pop-up error message to this effect.

So if you have a 2G iPhone on Prepay, then just leave the default APN to BLOCK data, change it to something else (eg. remove the "z" from "nz") and you can then use data.

This applies to the 2G iPhone on Vodafone Prepay without any data plans (casual data $1/day on days used).

I am on a legacy Prepay plan (Motormouth).

My personal experience has been that completely deleting and not having a profile seems to be the only way not to be charged and to get access to data denied.

set it back to the iphone apn and it will be "disabled"

invalid apns = enabled

Just to follow up...people's suggestions were right. Having the Vodafone APN installed but data roaming set to "Off" does not stop data working (and you being charged) in NZ....so I think people that suggested this setting is only for non-home networks are correct.

Hi everyone.

Just when I thought I was all sorted and couldn't access (and be charged for) data on my VF prepay SIM using APN www.iphone-vodafone.net.nz

Tonight suddenly I got a "new mail" beep and I was obviously surprised. $1 later, and I discovered that regardless of dummy APN or www.iphone-vodafone.net.nz, it would STILL allow me data access :/

Not very happy but I finally got around to installing SBSettings and that seems to stop the EDGE/GPRS pretty well.

I fiddled around again with dummy APN vs. www.iphone-vodafone.net.nz a wee while later and found that it reverted back to the previous state (unable to access data using www.iphone-vodafone.net.nz).

What's up with that??

Maybe depends if you are using 3G or GPRS. It used to work fine, unless vodafone have changed something recently.

This has always been my experience and there used to be a note on the unlockit website that warned you of that. As I said previously....

My personal experience has been that completely deleting and not having a profile seems to be the only way not to be charged and to get access to data denied.

That said, I still donated to the unlockit site...good on him!

I think vodafone just recently changed things so www.iphone-vodafone.net.nz would still allow access via any plan (not just iPhone plan) due to if you change the APN to www.vodafone.net.nz (for non iphone plans) then tethering option would disappear.

I'll have to try it tonight and see what happens... just have to find a vodafone sim card...

Yeah fine but more than one person has reported that www.iphone-vodafone.net.nz blocks data, and this was the experience I also had from last Friday until today.

More>fewer. Just saying.

And Lennon - the "change" for me was over the space of 30 -60 minutes. "Normal transmission resumed" as far as I have been able to assess by changing the APN back and forth.

As I was saying was maybe if you had 3G Access or GRPS Access? If you turn off 3G on the iPhone can you test and then make sure you have 3G Access and try again..

I haven't got access to a vodafone sim at home tonight (I'm using a MNVO sim card)

vodafone are allowing traffic on the iphone apn now even if you are not on a iphone plan

not sure how to disable data now without jailbreaking / having vodafone disable it on your account

If vodafone are now allowing "any" APN to access data then that sux.. but there is a way to do it (without jailbreaking it) but it is not a nice way of doing it . I'll get back to you after some testing.
