It's certainly different, not sure it will garner much of a following. I can see a lot of users opting for another style of case altogether.

But why does it need to be in the case to disable and conserve power. I know Steve jobs had a fear of power buttons, but at least it should be able to automatically turn itself off. This would be a big no for me, and I like apple products I also think it would look better with a small the apple logo on the sides, maybe even backlit. These just look like they could be any brand, and the mesh top part I can't see being very durable.

That is a real shame. The reviews up to this point were looking really good, and the $1k price point was starting to seem a bit more bearable.

It will be interesting to see what Apple has to say about this, but at this point I feel like this problem reinforces my preference towards more traditional audio brands who take a less ambitious and more risk averse approach to product design.

Lol - I acquired a pair of those last week; my "end-game" cans.

I still paid daft money, but it was nearly 2k less than the RRP and I love em.

My AirPods Max finally showed up this morning (having ordered in mid December).

My first impressions are wow, the build quality is next level. These things feel heavy and very cold, I love it. The digital crown is such a great idea for volume & media control too (once I changed the settings to reverse the order of volume up/down when rotating the crown).

The volume doesn't seem to go as loud as my Bose QC35 but I'm sure that can be adjusted (and I don't ever listen at maximum volume for obvious reasons).

Fingers crossed I don't get the condensation issue that some folks have been having – my Sony XM4s would glitch out after an hour or so of listening when moisture would build up and screw with the ANC sensors.

The "head detection" feature is speedy too compared to the XM4s I had previously; the music pauses & resumes almost instantly when I take these off & on. I'm guessing that's one of the benefits of the H1 chip and me being all-in on Apple products for listening.

I don't even hate the "smart bra", it's pretty inoffensive sitting on my desk, though it obviously would be useless for protecting the headphones when stuffed in a bag for travelling.

Thanks for sharing your initial thoughts. It would be good if you could post again after a few weeks of use if you have any further insights.

I haven't entirely gone off the idea of buying a pair myself but, given the price point, I really want to hear a bit more long term user feedback particularly around the condensation issue. I'm also keeping an eye on rumours about a cheaper 'sport' version of the Airpods Max as well as a potential offering from Sonos.

The iFixit tear down comparing the Airpods Max, Sony XM4s and Bose NC700 is interesting.

And after tearing down some of the competition, we're more understanding of that $550 price tag. Sony and Bose both charge less, but internally, the AirPods Max’s obsessive craftsmanship makes those other extremely capable devices look like toys by comparison.

But they are designed to be used on the go, and thus have a limited life through wear and tear and battery degradation. No point having bullet proof internals if the outer materials and battery give up long before.

To be honest I'm not a fan of the idea of using over-ear headphones 'on the go'. I see them as best suited for use at home, at a hotel, or on an aircraft.

For daily commuting I think Airpods Pro are a more suitable product due to being weatherproof and much more compact.
