I don't think the Watch Ultra is expensive - it's cheaper than a Garmin Epix and it's only $50 more expensive than the stainless steel 45mm series 8. The 49mm size is really too big for me but as a competitive runner I still really, really like this product. If I needed to replace my watch this year it would be a really tough choice between the Ultra and the series 8.

Interestingly the Airpods Pro don't appear to have the rumoured lossless capability, but I think I'll buy them anyway as I need to replace my old pair and they seem like a decent upgrade.

You're right, its not expensive when put beside and compared spec of spec against its nearest rivals. Its just the battery life still isn't acceptable for me. I do about about 8-10hours of running a week (GPS and Music). I can just about get 10days between charges on my Fenix 7 SS. I would still need to charge the AW Ultra everyday.

The 14 pro looks very promising - might just be time to retire the old 8+, this looks like the upgrade I've been waiting for. 🤣

I'd hang on another year and wait for the inevitable USB-C port. 😁

Sucks it didn't happen this year... but my current phone is almost dead, I'm willing to hold out since I have wireless charging everywhere anyway, and keen to try out MagSafe.

I'm hoping and intending to keep the 14 pro (maybe max?) for 3-4~ years unless I really get the upgrade itch.

I think I might hang onto my iPhone 11Pro for now and upgrade my watch to a Watch Ultra GPS+Cellular.

That way, I can rely less on my iPhone when mountain biking and more on the connectivity of the watch (current 6S is GPS only).

The additional battery life will be ideal for me as I won't do multisport or marathons, but using GPS and cellular while out biking, the additional battery life will be welcome.

I'd be interested to know if any of the current bands from Apple Watches will fit the Ultra properly. It's hard to tell and I haven't yet seen a compatibility statement. I have over a dozen watch straps which would be a shame to dispense with if I were to upgrade to the Ultra.

I seem to be one of very few people who aren't bothered about daily charging. It takes about five seconds to slap it on the charger and an additional ten seconds to remove it from the charger, secure it to my wrist and unlock it.

In the field, I find that a half marathon consumes about 20% of the battery of my series 6 (I do roughly 4:30/km). So I would have thought the Ultra would easily handle an all-day tramping expedition or ultra marathon.

The iphone 14 pre-release leaks were almost entirely accurate, including the look.

Leakers predicted the models, satellite feature, the main camera upgrade, and general computational photography details. Even the CPU's in each model.  So it was a boring announcement.

The biggest 'unleaked' feature was the dynamic island - but , that is software.

I'm on the iphone xs max, and I don't need to upgrade but I probably will . Nicer photos, 3x zoom, is good, 5g is not a selling feature at all because 4g is so fast.  The main reason to upgrade is that my son's iphone 6s is showing it's age so he can have my xs max.

For anyone planning to buy the Watch Ultra, I would be really curious to hear your experiences of the size when you eventually have some experience of wearing it for a while. My series 6 is fine for now but I would be seriously tempted to upgrade to a second generation Ultra next year, with my only reservation being my somewhat small wrists.

I'm training for an Ultra marathon now that will take me between 11-13hrs. The AW Ultra won't do that. Later next year I'll take on an Ultra that will take me 24-26 hrs. But this isn't about the 1% of us that do crazy stuff. For the majority of people that run a 5kn parkrun, a local 10km or even a half marathon the AW Ultra will easily cover the event. Its not about the event its the 7 days a week for X number of weeks of training where you will still have to charge the watch everyday just to go for a 45min run every second day.

To be honest the Ultra is probably overkill for any of that. The series 8 would be more than adequate, especially when you consider the additional running metrics in WatchOS 9.

My main gripe with my series 6 is that it's fiddly to start an activity and water lock the display as I cross the start line at an event. I assume the additional button on the Ultra could help with that.

Talking about these iWatch's in general, how water proof are they? I do hydro pool lap walking and some swimming. I also do aqua-aerobics. Are they sealed enough for these activities?

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Does anyone know (based on past experience) if any NZ retailers normally drop the price of previous models after the announcement of this new iPhone 14?

As I'm looking to get an iPhone, either 12/12 mini/13 mini, but thought I'd wait in case price drops?

Three different model classes for one watch? For pedestrians, the masses and for extreme athletes/expedition participants? That's what I call marketing, because every desk person will really belong to the latter group (provided they can afford it - or not). Congratulations Apple! :-)

Don't get me wrong - technologically impressive, but cleverly marketed.

Yes, from apple watch 3 onwards all have been water resitant to 50m and swimming is a workout activity on the watch. The Ultra can be used for diving to 40 metres.

Let's see how many will trigger the satellite emergency call in a drunken state and be amazed at the subsequent bill for the false alarm ... after all, the service is included for 2 years ....

.... in the US and Canada.

Don't they even drink over their thirst there?

I am really curious to see how they will deal with the false alarms, as the serious emergency services do not accept unconfirmed, direct contacts. Most alarms will go to "service centres" where there are then other people (sources of error) in the message chain. There is nothing like a separate, proper PLB.

Anyone else planning to go online at midnight Friday, when iPhone 14 pre-orders open, to try and be near the head of the queue on Apple Store?

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Not surprising that the 'Leaks' were accurate, it has been the same for years. Only Apple can turn a hole in the screen for a camera, into a feature and call it an 'island'. ^he Pill does look bigger than I thought it would be, when you compare it to hole punches on other phone brands. When they do have an underscreen camera, that will quickly disappear I am sure.
