Just to tease me the lightning adapter turned up today.

Really surprised how small the new connector is, hopefully the nice new scuff free/problem free phone will be in a couple of weeks.

Lol, why should Apple have included one for free?! Technology moves forward..

If it makes you feel any better, there's an article somewhere, perhaps on ifixit, where they explain that it's actually very well made as far as durability goes, perhaps helping to justify the cost.

Got mine too - shipping took 3 days which is good to know for when the phone ships.

To put it in perspective, Apple haven't changed their connector for a decade, while I believe Samsumg have changed theirs something like 18 times over the same period. Guess it had to happen eventually.

There is a small chip inside that excludes video connections unlike old connector which was audio and video.

EU rules state that usb connections MUST be on all mobiles.

Would not have hurt Apple to include a free connector with all new phones. Im sticking to that view.

They are making an HDMI to Lightning adapter, which for me is great. I didn't need the old plug adapter, for some people its just an annoying problem carrying multiple adapters. I also thought under the ONE FOR ALL law it was a requirement maybe it is a loophole that you just need to have one available even if separate.

Just fyi, the chip doesn't stop video playback through the cable, it's for authentication:

And further reading on lack of video over cable support:
http://www.cultofmac.com/190677/the-iphone-5-lightning-adapter-wont-work-with-video-or-ipod-out-accesosries/

Although there is ambiguity around the video out support there, considering they say nothing of it and then
and that video will

Apple includes a micro USB to Lightning adapter with all iPhone 5's sold in the EU, I would say that this is what allows them to get around the  whole 'all mobile phones must use a micro-usb connection for charging' rule in the EU.
Just having one available is probably not enough, it needs to be included so that consumers can use their existing chargers with the iPhone 5 out of the box (via the adapter).

The lightning cable I ordered a couple of weeks later than my iPhone 5 shipped yesterday (17th Oct) and will be arriving today (Status - Out to delivery).
Pretty quick TNT (overnight) delivery from Sydney.

Stoked! My phone just showed up a few minutes ago from Vodafone/Brightpoint :)

I never received a confirmation/tracking number via email so it was an awesome surprise right before the long weekend (and my birthday).
