littleheaven: No, no, this is BAD! Now I've got my 5 and discovered how much faster it is than my old 3GS, and seen the wonder that is the retina display, I really really want to update my 1st gen iPad to a 4. I just spent all my savings on the iPhone. Oh well, I guess that's what credit cards are for.
Personally, for the extra processing power, I'll be spending the extra $200-ish to get the newer version, I think.

I have an iPad3, I could see the retina was a little bit better, but not a lot really. Now, if I look at my wifes iPad2, I can certainly tell. Maybe an iPad3 at the current reduced end of line prices, if still available, is a good cost effective option?
NonprayingMantis: bizarely cheap pricing IMO.
I know it is refurbished, but the 16GB Wifi model of the 'old' ipad with Retina is now CHEAPER than a new 16GB iPad2. ($579)
I would have thought the price would be somewhere between the two, maybe around $650 for the old ipad with retina.
mattwnz:If you can get the ipad 3 for the ipad 2 price, that would be a good deal. But otherwise, the ipad 4 is a far more powerful machine, and will outlast an ipad 3 in terms of future IOS updates. It perhpas shortens the life of the ipad 3 a bit in terms of updates, as will the ipad 3 get all the newer software features of the ipad 4 in the future, I doubt it.

da5id: I went to apple.co.nz and looked at the ipad Mini. Looked good to me in size and price, and I thought about getting one, UNTIL I found out that it doesn't have a Retina Display. This is a huge step backward for Apple, when even the iPod Touch has a retina display. It doesn't make sense, and would be a letdown for users like me who have an iPod Touch and an iphone with retina display to have to drop down to a lower resolution.
More important though is the screen. Apple’s is 1024 x 768. That’s good for developers, of course, but it won’t render text as sharply as the Nexus’ 1280 x 800 panel, and certainly not the 2048 x 1536 screen on the 9.7in iPad. The iPad Mini has pixel density of just 163ppi, more than the iPad 2’s 132ppi, of course, but still a lot less than the Nexus’ 216ppi.
Enough processing power to smooth the flow of UI animations and games is good, but a crisp display, which benefits all apps, is better. Text rendering quality is arguably the ‘killer app’ in a tablet.
Not going “retina” seems doubly a mistake when the Mini is so clearly aimed at buyers wanting a convenient device on which to read e-books, and when it’s the first thing potential buyers see when they view the product - usually right alongside alternatives - in shops and stores.
dickytim: I believe Apple will have intentionally excluded retina display precisely for people like me, I was tossing up between Ipad Mini and Ipad 3, not that the mini has been announced and does not have the retina display it is becoming easier for me to lean towards the Ipad 4 (now that it has also been announced).
There has to be a significant difference between the mini and full size otherwise they will cannibalize each others market.
For me it has made everything a little more entertaining and now given me something else to research.
I have saved up $300 of gift vouchers for DSE and generally get $300 every 6 months so by Chirstmas will have $600 so it is do I spend
$680 and get Ipad mini wi-fi + Cell 16gb
pros - price
cons - small screen size
- slower processor
- lower resolution screen
- Nano sim (cant change my iphone sim in to it)
$929 and get Ipad 4 wi-fi + Cell 16gb
pros - small screen size
- slower processor
- lower resolution screen
- micro sim
cons - price
To be honest the only real con that matters is the screen size and I would have to play with a mini beside the full size to see if it matters to me.
Price is really $80 or $329

Or you could get a refurbished ipad3 cheaper from apple direct, which should be as good as a new one. But I guess you couldn't use your vouchers. Also I had heard that the ipad 3 is slower then the ipad 2 because even though it has an X chip it still loses a bit of speed driving the retina display.
The ipad 3 should have a longer life than the ipad mini, and I expect it to be 12- 18 months before they upgrade it again, so it should retain it's value for longer. The ipad mini I think will get a retina display at it's next upgrade woigth an A6X processor, possibly in 12 months.
