You can use Siri now, if you switch your region to the U.S. We use it all the time, and it has little problems understanding our New Zillund accent.

"What did she say?" is a particularly useful feature, and using Siri to populate search terms is also great.

Any comments on its usability for a Blu-ray movie replacement? At least until better streaming services become the norm. No hurry for that though, we aren't due to get fibre until 2019. And Sky UK have just released its next generation STB so SkyNZ will be about 2020.

Put it this way. We're very hesitant to purchase physical movies now. And even on our 10 Mbps ADSL connection, streaming is fine.

Thanks. It would appear to be worth a crack. The proof will only be in the viewing, but having invested thousands already in our home theatre setup, it needs to be for more than watching rugby tests. So a few hundy for an ATV4 may be a worthwhile investment.

Do you fellas just rent/purchase the moves direct through Apple/itunes or do you subscribe to a different service/provider? Just wondering, because I am a bit of a noob here and was thinking about renting a couple of movies but didn't want to subscribe to any service as such because our use is sooooo limited it really wouldn't make much sense.

Renting is a pretty easy way to go (via itunes) Just pay as you need, and no recurring charges, or subscription cost.

I'm not keen on purchasing as even though you "own" the media, you don't really. So I prefer the rental model as there's no implied ownership.

What's driving me at the moment is the closure of our video store so my intention is just to hire movies from iTunes. No subscription required. I have Lightbox, but that is complimentary with my Spark broadband.
It's all a bit of an experiment, but I'm hoping that the AppleTV is a mature enough product and this version has been out long enough for the most annoying bugs to have been stamped on.

Rent through iTunes, or watch for free on Netflix or HBO Now.

I shy away from purchasing digital movies from iTunes, after being gifted a free movie from Apple that refuses to play anywhere due to poorly implemented DRM protections.

I'd expect it's pretty mature...I was doing it with my Apple TV2 or TV3.

If you can, try and get on to the US store, rentals are about $4 USD and are on US DVD release schedule - much earlier than here. Though to be fair I haven't looked at the NZ releases for a while.

Personally I don't know why they need much storage at all. I think my 3 is only about 8gb - enough for one movie....but I guess these new ones might cache like a phone? Caching video files, and images etc for speed.

Personally, I'd only go the 64GB if you intend to download lots of games. Although the choice was taken out of my hands when my wife got me the 64GB one for Christmas. Apparently the "Bigger is always better" mantra must have hit home. :-)

Not a replacement, no. But a complimentary service. As you state, it's not great for the latest release movies (the US iTunes store is our preference for that), but there is plenty of older content on there. HBO also has some reasonably recent releases, such as Mad Max Fury Road.

Not a replacement, no. But a complimentary service. As you state, it's not great for the latest release movies (the US iTunes store is our preference for that), but there is plenty of older content on there. HBO also has some reasonably recent releases, such as Mad Max Fury Road.

Neither of those services are free... and HBO requires geo-unblocking (as does Netflix if you want access to a decent catalogue).
