I really hope the aussie banks manage to break apple monopoly on the nfc payments on the iphone. ANZ were the ones that sold out. Probably because they cant get customers any other way.

No one has access to the NFC on an iPhone other than Apple. 3 iOS SDK's have existed since apple put NFC into the iPhone and still nothing. If they wanted devs to use it they would have done so by now. Its not so much that ANZ sold out its the only way that any bank has access to the NFC functionality.

I see the road apple pay leads down giving too much control to apple.

What do you mean "the censorship ideals of apple"? Apple are notoriously strict on privacy, to the favour of the consumer. Did the semi-recent FBI case not give you more faith in their stance on privacy?

I wouldn't trust an Android device with my payment information in a million years, god only knows what Google would do with all the data about what you're buying. I'd put Google higher than Facebook on the list of companies who I believe don't give a damn about privacy.

Try buying porn thru the apple store. Anything they don't like cant be sold. That is censorship.

Can you clarify? Your reasoning for being anti Apple Pay is because Apple won't let you buy porn via the Apple Store??

It is because they are deciding where and where not you can pay when using their services. At the moment it is fine with apple pay via NFC and a payment terminal but apple pay is also a web based service and they will not accept places that do not meet their moral ideals for payment.

IMO it is not the job of a payment processor to decide what I can spend money on. ASB doesnt care if "carparts ltd" comes up on my visa, yet apple are quite happy to refuse to let places they do not like accept payment thru them. They are bluring the lines between censor, store and payment processor.

Lol that's a bit different. They don't want their brand associated with those things, or they see it as being too much effort to manage since those sites aren't exactly known for being trust worthy.

If Apple wanted to censor something they'd be blocking sites on the computers and phones they sell etc, but I don't see that happening any time soon? They're basically saying they want nothing to do with those sites, but aren't stopping anyone from using them, or stopping them conducting business.

This already happens (although to a lesser extent) with Visa, Mastercard, AMEX, banks and others. They can all choose who they do business with. For example, a bank may decline the business of a brothel should they decide (Not suggesting and are or would, but that's their prerogative). PayPal is notorious for picking and choosing who they provide services too, and Visa/MC (and others) have famously blocked payments to Wikileaks.

From what I understand this has nothing to do with apple having a monopoly. Apple would have to give banks access to the secure enclave (if that is even possible), which would be a really bad idea.

During a transaction, the terminal communicates directly with the Secure Element through the Near Field Communication (NFC) controller on iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus over a dedicated hardware bus.

Elmoz: Signed up with ANZ this morning online, then wandered to nearest ANZ branch and told them I'd just signed up online, gave them the required ID and within 30mins was all set for Apple Pay. Did Apple Pay transaction about an hour later no probs.

How'd you get a card straight away. I have to wait a week for one to turn up for me.

Pretty much the same deal with me, they issued me with a temporary card until the card with my name on it turns up. Awesome service from anz.

They offered me an instore debit visa without my name free for first year or i could get a personalised one for $10. Don't need the card other than to get the CVV off it to register it in the wallet.
